Train Dublin to Galway
 

Looking for some local help, planning a trip for Aug/Sept 2022. Flying from Boston, US, to Dublin but need to meet friends in Galway. It looks like there are convenient trains, true? About how much is an Uber or similar from the airport to the train station? Is that the best option?

Thanks in advance. Will likely be looking for more info as plans come together. Just trying to book flights at this point.

You may want the bus to Galway instead. For checking out various options try www.rome2rio.com. Based on a search there is appears the bus leaves from the airport, has some stops but is the same bus.

I've taken that train several years ago -- 3 hours straight across Ireland. However, I hear great things about the Irish bus system too, so worth checking out.

Train through the countryside is much nicer than a bus on an ugly motorway.

Thank you for the answers, my question is whether it is possible to take an UBER from the airport to the train station. We will be tired after an overnight flight and don't want to deal with messy busses, trying to figure stuff out, etc.

Why would you want to use uber? Just step out to the taxi rank. (it works different in the Republic -- even using uber, you would be booking a regular taxi in any case)

janisi: any idea how much a taxi might cost? Very rough est. is fine. Thanks! Just don't want to be in for a 100 euro ride or something.

I just did a Google search and found the current rate to be around €30. Enjoy your trip! It would be so much easier to fly into Shannon if we could. Hopefully tourism will pick up and Aer Lingus will reconsider their decision to leave Shannon.

Aer Lingus does fly direct from Boston to Shannon; however, our trip ends in Edinburgh and we're trying to find the best combination of flights. Aer Lingus doesn't fly EDI to BOS, so we're doing something on one end of the other.

If you're going straight from the airport to Galway then most people would take the direct bus rather than go in the wrong direction into the city and Heuston station in order to get the train. In general I prefer train to bus but you would be saving yourself a fair bit of time, and money spent on a taxi to the station. By the time you are on the train you would be halfway to Galway on the bus.

Not quite sure I understand the issue or what "so we're doing something on one end of the other" means. Aer Lingus is a partner with BA and several other airlines so you can likely work out something with code share flights. Or - book one ways on different carriers. Or - connect through LHR. I don't have time to research flights right now, but mainly to explain that you don't have to stick to one airline.

Thanks for all your help and sorry for the confusion. I meant that we either had to get from DUB to Galway at the beginning of the trip OR fly from EDI back to DUB at the end. Husband decided on the first option, so we're Delta round trip, which allows us to be on the same flight as our friends on the way home from EDI to Boston. I've saved the bus and train links - THANK YOU all! Almost a year to continue researching this trip. Our friends have been to ireland several times so they're our guides for that part of the trip but I'm still reading all the trip posts here.
