Train Connection from FCO to Termini

I am arriving Rome FCO at 8AM and wish to make the 8:47 train to the Termini and then catch the 9:57 La Spezia train. I wonder if that timing will work. How long should I allow from the airplace arrival to the time I can start walking toward the brideway to the train station. Consider I have an older mother to attend also. I am thinking I will have to wait until the 9:57 out of the FCO and then catch the 11:57.

Also, how come I cannot get the "calculate fare" link to work on the Trenitalia site?

thanks,

As I recall, the train trip to Termini was about 30 minutes. The real problem is the plane-arriving may not mean clearing customs until 8:45. Takes a while to de-plane and when we were there two years ago our bags took a while to get to us.

Please don't give the old girl a heart attack. The train to Termini can be quite a distance from your terminal. If you were alone and had no bags, maybe (with two wings and a prayer). 47 minutes is not realistic at all.

I have arrived in Rome and taken the train to Florence two different times.

In both instances, with checked luggage, it has taken about 1 and 1/2 to two hours from arrival to boarding the train.

This is picking up luggage, customs, buying ticket at FCO, arriving at Termini in Rome, finding the track and boarding the train.

This has just been my experience.

Hope this helps.

Retrieving your luggage and clearing Passport Control will be you biggest problem, although I have gone through very quicly at Fiumicino (they didn't even look inside my passport, just at the cover and waved me through). After getting your luggage, look for the sign that says, USCITA (Exit). When you come out to the Arrivals Area, turn left and go through automatic doors. You will turn right again and go down an escaltor to elavators. You take an elevator to the trains (this takes very little time). You must then buy a ticket for the train. The ticket line can take as long as 10 minutes. Everything seems to depend on the arrival of your plane. I think the fare is around $9 US. I am not positive, but I think there is an express train to Termini. The train I took was not an express and there were several stops. I know it took longer than 30 minutes. Good luck.

Thanks, all. Heu, NYSnob, I had to laugh at the line "don't give the old girl a heart attack".

baymtnman, assuming you have not already purchased your tickets, buy them both (FCO-Termini and Termini-La Spezia) at the FCO ticket window. This will save you standing in another line in Termini.

I love passing this tip on because it was the first helpful hint I received on fodors.

And I agree that you shouldn't plan on the 8:47. If you make it, great. If not, you'll catch the next one. Buon viaggio!

Having just made this trip last Monday, I think it is entirely feasible. I took the "Leonardo Express" - a 30 minute train ride to/from the airport and Termini station for only 8,80 euros (per person). There were not long Customs lines in the airport (I took Lufthansa/United). Most of the intense security focus is mainly in the U.S. airports, as I learned later in my trip! I was waved through as all the other passengers were.

However, given the fact that you are traveling with your elderly mother, it is good that you have that secondary option of taking the later train at 11:57 a.m. There are several trains daily that go to La Spezia so you needn't worry. Enjoy your trip!

I'm sorry but I think you should allow yourselves extra time at the airport.

Train times to La Spezia you gave are those from Roma Ostiense station !
Trains to La Spezia leave Roma Termini at .46 minutes past the hour and stop at Roma Ostiense at .57 past the hour.

If you are on time, take local train as far as Roma Ostiense and change to the 9.57 train to La Spezia, there.

If you are late, go to Roma Termini with the Leonardo Express train. There are many stores inside and below the station to spend your time waiting for the 11.46 train.

Local trains to Roma Ostiense run every 15 minutes Monday through Saturady (at 12, 27,42,57 past each hour) and every 30 minutes on Sunday (at 27,57 past each hour). Travel time is 27 minutes.

Fares from Rome to La Spezia are : € 27.68 second class, € 38.58 first class.

If you are buying train tickets on line, you station in Rome can only be Roma Termini . As at Roma Ostiense there are not any of those automatic vending machines where tickets are iussed.

Hope this helps.
