Train confusion
 

I am looking at one country passes. I have read about the Bayern Ticket in Germany and do not know if that is the better way to go. Can 5 peple go on one ticket?? Right now we are most likely going to get a 5 day pass/one country. Start out in Stuttgart, go to Munich, go to Fussen, Saltzburg and then to Memmengen to fly to Sweden. Any advice...I know it's a lot of travelling. It is also oh so overwhelming!!

You can use the Bayern Ticket/ Bayern Karte from Munich to Fuessen, from Munich to Salzburg and from Muich to Memmingen. These are all in Bavaria, and relatively short distances so that having to use Regio trains (a limitation of the Bayern Karte) instead of faster IC, ICE or EC trains may add 1/2 hour to your trip, at the most. The Bayernkarte isd also good for the bus from the Memmingen station to the airport.

For the Stuttgart - Munich stretch, you can buy a discounted ticket on the Internet. The discount starts 92 days before the trip, and decreases as the time gets closer to the travel date. You can use any of the train types. There are frequent ICE (very fast) and IC, a bit slower express train between these two cities. To get the discounted price, you have to commit yourself to taking a specific train. For 2 EUR (I believe) you can reserve seat on this train.

There might also be some group tickets available, but I'm not familiar with these. Browse through the www.bahn.de website. They should be listed there.

In any event, check www.bahn.de for schedules and prices. Look for the appropriate flag at the top of the page to find your preferred language.

The Bayernkarte is for up to 5 people travelling on the same ticket, for EUR28, all day. During the week you cannot start your trip before 9AM, it is good until,3AM the next day. This limitation is not in effect over the weekend.

Thank you. I will look into the Bayern card vs decreasing the days on the Eurail pass. Part of me likes the idea of getting one pass and go. The other part of me wants to being frugile. When I see RE or RJ listed on the DB Bahn schedule, are they the trains that a Bayern Pass would be accepted?? If that is the case, then it may make sense to only use this instead of the eurail, unless we have to travel before 9 in the morning. Am I correct??

Bayern Pass is not valid on the RJ, but yes on the RE.

When looking up connections on www.bahn.de for those routes within Bavaria, tick "only local transport" - then you will be shown only connections the Bayern-Ticket is valid on.

Salzburg counts as border station, hence the Bayern-Ticket is valid on the trains to Salzburg, but not on public transport in the city.

Thank you all for your replies!! Will I need to purchase my Bayernkarte for my trip from Saltzburg to Memmengen in Germany or can I purchase it at Saltzburg train station??

There is a DB ticket machine too at the Salzburg train station were you can buy the ticket without extra fees.

Be careful, the english page is a mess. To buy the ticket, you must specify a place of departure, a time after 9am and your destination. They will then sell you a Bayern-Ticket that shows that you're booked on a specific train, when in fact you can use that tick on all regional and local trains on that day and to any destination within the area the ticket is valid.
