Train advice - Varenna to Tirano then Bernina Express to Pontresina

Can someone please advise.
I am taking my wife to the Italian Lakes for the first time in July 2011.
We are staying in Bellagio. I'd like to do the following trip in one day if possible.
Can we take the train directly from Varenna to Tirano and how long does that journey take?
Once in Tirano, can we take the Bernina Express to Pontresina (I read somewhere that Pontresina was a better stop than St. Moritz) and then return same day for our jouney back to Varenna and ferry back to Bellagio? How long will this take.
Should we book tickets in advance or on the day?
Where can I find accurate train times for all journeys?
Many Thanks

If you go all the way to St. Moritz you can then get the postal bus to Menaggio on the west shore of Lago Como and complete the cycle. Not sure about timing.
