Also make sure you settle on the price before you get in the taxi and before you load up the luggage into the trunk. There may be an attendant there to help you but you can have the driver write down the price for you if you don't understand Italian or he doesn't speak English.
If you hire a driver from one of the noted companies that are mentioned here all the time, a driver will/should be standing at the exit of the baggage claim with your name on a paper.

To those who asked the train came and went on track 25 like it used to. Last year when we were there it was on track 24 which is the last one in the main station area. I liked it a lot better on track 24.

IMO, a car service is the safest bet. If you don't wish to use some of the popular choices mentioned on Fodor's, you can always rely on your hotel to make arrangements.
Taxi drivers can be surly. Some are notorious for being rip-off artists. If you don't speak Italian and/or you're not a savvy traveler, you can fall prey. Also, taxi lines tend to be long at the airport and the train stations. If it's raining, the wait in line can be irritating, even ruinous. I prefer to be prepared for the unexpected when I arrive.
My experience suggests most private car service drivers speak decent English. Their cars are clean and comfortable, often luxurious. They meet you outside baggage claim with your name like they do at most other airports. IMO, any extra cost is worth the convenience, the luxury ride, and a hassle-free negotiation.
