Towns along or near the Saone River in Burgundy
Hi,
We will be doing a self drive barge trip on the Saone River in Burgundy in July.
Do you have any favorite towns or things to see on or near the river that we shouldn't miss?
We will be able to bike for short distances from the river as well.
Can you share some restaurants that you love?
Thank you.
Joan

Hi Joan:
You will love your trip! We've done a self-drive along the Saone for the last two years, and we're going back again in September! We've usually been centered near Chalon sur Saone and have ventured into some of the smaller rivers and canals off the Saone. Some highlights for us:
"Le Bistrot" restaurant in Chalon sur Saone.
The town of Verdun sur le doubs; we enjoyed the Hostellerie Bourguignonne restaurant.
Louhans poultry market. (Louhans is at the end of the river Seille).
Lameloise (expensive!) restaurant and Grenier a Sel in Chagny, the first large town up the Canal du Centre.
The villages of Santenay and Rully, off the Canal du Centre.
The town of Tournus.
David Downie's "Food Wine Burgundy" book was very helpful--many good finds.
Have a great time!
