I was curious, which town is in the background?

That's Villeneuve, about a 45 minute walk from Chillon.

Of course it looks far different today. There is a church in Villeneuve, but you cannot see it from Chillon. And the artist has played a bit with perspective.

I have looked at some photos. We do see the church, don't we ?
Not from the chillon castle but from the painter's perspective, of the Chillon with Villeneuve in the back.
