Tower of London - buy tickets in advance?
I did a search and noticed that many people bought tickets to the tower in advance at the local tube stations. But, some mentioned that buying it in advance wasn't necessary - any thoughts?

I'll be in London at the beginning of June, so it will be busy by that time, I believe.

Also, can you only buy tickets the day before you go to the tower, or can they be bought a couple of days in advance? How much are the tickets?

Anne,

You can buy the tickets up to 7 days in advance. The prices: adults £11.30, children £7.50, concessions (seniors, students, handicapped) £8.50.

Main advantage? NO LINES (believe me, they can be huge at the Tower ticket booths).

You may want to check out this site: http://www.londontransport.co.uk/

Enjoy your trip

Phil

The last few times I have taken folks thru the Tower we bought tickets the day before and arrived at the tower at opening time (8:00 I think) . . walked right in. Best strategy is to go directly to the Crown Jewels, (signage is good) then wander back up front and join a Yoeman Warder (commonly called Beefeater) guided tour. The tour is included in the ticket price and is really good.

In the summer, the line to buy tickets can be over a two hour wait in the middle of the day. The tour busses start unloading around 10:00 and it really can become crowded in a hurry.

Enjoy London . . Rich

If you decide not to buy tickets in advance, I recommend that you arrive at the Tower before it opens. I was there in April a few years ago and got there about 10 minutes prior to it opening and there were only a couple more people in line, so it wasn't a problem. However, if you wait until later, the lines get very long. Also, when you first get inside the Tower, I recommend going directly to the Jewel Tower. Early in the morning, there are no lines, however, that changes quickly. Have a great trip.

I had planned on buying tickets online to avoid the lines, but recently discovered the 2for1 deals, which would save me half the price at the Tower. The downside is I will not be able to buy the tickets online, and even if I go a day or two before I plan to visit to purchase tickets, will have to wait in the line. Thoughts?
Are lines typically less crowded in the evenings? |
