Tours to the Champagne district and Reims
Has anybody had experience taking a tour from Paris to the Champagne district for the day? We are a party of six and would like to find a tour company to use for the trip during our stay in Paris in December. Thanks.

We took the Veuve Cliquot tour independently and we had a good time. Just secure a reservation first (we did the Grand Dame tour, 25E); then buy your TGV RT Paris-Reims ticket. We walked from the city center to the Basilica then walked to VC. After the tour, we requested the VC receptionist to call a taxi for us to the city center (10E).

I did go with a large tour to Epernay to tour Moet et Chandon which was nice and then to Reims to see the Cathedral which is gorgeous and we also took the TGV trainand it wasn't even an hour away. I don't know the tour company but recommend the area! (Especially if you love champagne) it is probably easier to tour a Champagne house in Reims so you don't have to arrange transportation to Epernay.

Tours from Paris to Champagne are great and a perfect day trip outside the city especially with a 45 min TGV.
If you're going to go here is a company that will get you there http://www.tastysidetolifetours.com/.
They focus on small producers but you can specify if you want to just do large producers. If you're going in Dec make sure to make a stopover at the Christmas market. They are greaaaat in france! Also, don't skip out of a Mich star lunch. The company should be able to take you to a great one for about 40 euro per person and 5 or 6 courses.

A friend and I were in Paris in June and took a side trip to Reims on our own for champagne tours (recommended by a friend who leads wine tours all over France) and seeing the cathedral. If you're interested in going on your own (very easy to do), let me know and I'll give you details.

FFF,
Wow, An old thread resurrected!. We took a tour offered by ParisVision. We had the van from Paris and the driver/guide to ourselves. We saw Reims, had time to tour the Cathedral. We went to a local cooperative to see their operation. We had lunch in Epernay, I think and then a tour in one of the Champagne houses. We even had time to tour the church where Dom Perignon is buried. We thought it was a nice trip. The driver had us back in Paris at our apartment by 6PM. Our travel was done in December, 2010.

waterdog-thank you! Sometimes when I am on the forum jumping from post to post, I do not even notice the date. Like this morning, I jumped around and landed on a great trip report, copied and pasted it, then noticed the date........2009!
maryanntex-I would very much like the details of doing it on our own.

This might help

Epernay is very much the smaller town of the area and I prefer it, just a short walk from the Station gets you the Avenue de Champagne and TI.
Rheims, a much bigger place well spread out, the Cathedral is underwhelming while TI is normally very busy (too busy) they have a Carnegie Library out the back of the Cathedral and the Old Forum is to the North about a 10 minute walk. Pity the station is a bit too far away to make it all pleasant.

foolforfrance,
Reims is very easy to do on your own. The TGV takes 45 min and leaves from Gare de l'Est. Try to book your ticket to Reims Gare which is walking distance to the center of town as opposed to the other station, Champagne-Ardenne, which is 8 km outside of town. Here are the champagne houses that offer public tours http://www.reims-tourism.com/tabid/15199/Default.aspx Some are located closer to the train station and others are south of town about 30 min walking distance from the station (there are also buses and taxis available). Some require advance reservations while others are available on a walk in basis. I would start inquiring about reservations now if you are interested in a particular house. Here are a few previous threads on day trips to Reims:

Epernay is also possible as a day trip. I only spent a very brief amount of time there. There are direct non-TGV trains that take about one hour and 15 min from Paris. Epernay is about a 20 min train ride from Reims if you decide to do both.
