Tours to Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Berlin

Is there a tour that provides airfare, hotels, some meals, and transportation from city to city, but stays in each of these cities for at least 3 days and allows us to sightsee on our own. Or should we look for a driver who will take us to these cities and drive us to the sights we want to see? It appears that having a driver is very costly.

You can easily organize your own airfare, hotels and train travel between cities. Then take local bus or walking tours in each city.

If you want to have someone arrange the former have a look at Gate 1 or similar companies that sell packages. (But do look at the hotels they are offering carefully - many of the less expensive ones may not be acceptable to americans - shared baths and stairs versus elevator etc.)

And yes, having a private car and driver in each city will be incredibly expensive. Much better to tour on your own and then take local group tours - unless your budget is unlimited.

On my first trip to Prague we booked everything independently (including travel from Vienna), but for sightseeing used the services of Dana Chaloupka as a tour guide. She was extremely nice, helpful and knowledgeable, and speaks excellent English. She had a website http://sweb.cz/travelcz

On my second trip we had two guided tours provided by General Tours, and our knowledgeable and English-fluent guide, Jana Lukesova, freelances as well. Her email address is [email protected] I mention this one because although again, we didn't use the company for intercity travel, I'll bet they can arrange a customized itinerary for you.

You need to realize that all of the places you mention have very well-developed tourist infrastructures with many people fluent in English. Traveling on your own would be incredibly simple. If you choose to have a full-time guide - rather than do the up front work yourself and jsut pick up local waking tours (which IMHO are often fascinating) - it's certainly possible - but it's really a luxury and will be priced accordingly.

It is very easy to DIY; but if you want a package, you can try GoToday.com. It has a Budapest/Vienna/Prague package for 6 nights; which include air and rail and hotels. But you can choose to add additional nights if you want, and then just add Berlin to the end of the trip.
