touring London Houses of Parliament--are tickets required?

I've been reading about the best way to see the Houses of Parliament. I've read in different areas of how to take a tour, whether stand in line or order a ticket in advance. Is it difficult to get a ticket in advance? Is it necessary? Also, how does one go about getting in to see debates? We will be there in late Aug. Unfortunately, one of the days is Aug. 25, the bank holiday. Will that affect entry? Thanks for the info!

Jon

I believe that only UK residents can see debates taking place (assuming you are not from the UK).

Have a look at -

Actually - oversas visitors can attend debates - but both houses are in recess in August so that is out.

Tours for overseas visitors have been discontinued. You could contact the US embassy - but that is a long shot. If you have a friend living in the UK they might be able to get you in by getting an invite from their MP.

Are the tours discontinued indefinitely? Does that mean we can't go inside either just to look around ourselves?

When we were in London mid May, there was a sign up that there were no tours available till summer. I believe that is when there is nothing going on, but you can go in to see the building, but that was my assumption at the time. We were not able to see it while there, except for the outside. What an impressive building!

I don't think you've ever been able to just go in and wander round by yourself. If you have not already looked at the website for the Houses of Parliament, here is the address.

http://www.parliament.uk/

It has all the tour info you should need.
