Touring Churches in Greece
 

We are planning a trip to Greece this year. In looking through some travel guides, one 1994 book said that women should wear skirts when visiting churches. I wouldn't attempt to go in shorts and a sleeveless shirt, but is it still the case that one couldn't wear slacks?

If I'm going to a service in a Greek church I usually try to wear a skirt but I have worn pants as well (most women will wear a skirt). As far as just visiting a church I have worn shorts and pants on plenty of occasions. But I always have at least a short sleeved shirt on. I don't think you will offend anyone in slacks.<BR>

I was in Greece in 2000 and skirts were required in most of the churches we went in (and the Monesteries at Meteora). Interestingly enough, there was usually a box of VERY ugly skirts outside from which you could borrow one. I always thought it interesting that God would prefer me in an ugly skirt than attractive pants. :-)

Thanks for your replies. Guess I'll try to take pretty skirts. Don't you think the Lord must have a terrific sense of humor?

I have just been to Greece, october, and had no trouble entering any church in slacks so can't see a problem. Shorts for women are usually frowned upon and sun tops also, best in a shirt, blouse or polo shirt. I believe attitudes are changing fast in Greece, the women are very smart and up market, especially in Athens, the days of black are almost over even in the islands. I did not see any boxes of skirts, interesting comment though.
