Tour Pompeii, Amalfi Coast from Sorrento by "Limo" or train?
My family of 4 (Parents with 2 teens) will be in Sorrento, Italy for a week in March. We are trying to decide whether to tour by train/public transportation or car and driver. We are experienced travelers and on previous trips have enjoyed both modes of tuouring. Each has its ups and downs, depending greatly on the nature of the location, amount of time available, number of people, etc. . A driver/guide often gave us insight into the country/region , and pointed out places or things that we wouldn't have seen on our own. On the other hand, trains are often easy, cheap, and can be part of the experience. The Compania Arte Card seems like a very good deal, which includes transportation. Any insight into that? There are several drivers who have been highly recommended in earlier postings. We have been to their websites and it is costly, but do-able considering there are 4 of us. We just want to be able to see and experience as much as we can, without wearing ourselves out researching and trying to get around. I would appreciate input or suggestions on the best way to see and experience this region , from anyone who has been there.

I would like to recomend
http://www.seesorrento.com/chi_sono_eng.html Marcello Maresca. He was a marvelous tour guide. He has been recommended by many people on other travel boards, which is where I found him. I had family and personal friends use him as well as travel buddies on Consig.com. Everyone loved him Hope this helps Frank and Val |
A driver may come in handy for the Amalfi coast, but you wouldn't need one for Pompeii. The train drops you off right in front of Pompeii and is an easy trip from Sorrento. There are headphones you can get in Pompeii to describe all the sights.

Hi Sol
From Sorrento you can take the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii and Naples Take the ferry to Capri Take the ferry to Salerno and the train to Paestum Take the bus back from Salerno via Amalfi Take the bus or ferry to Positano and Amalfi I don't think that you will need a driver. |
I'm seriously thinking of hiring Ira!!
Some seriously great info! :-) Pete |
