The trip you describe is a simple one. No need to even be speaking with a travel agent (and especially not one trying to talk you into something you don't want to do!).
You are fine on your own. I've only been to Europe 5 times and only speak English but have never once had any kind of issue I was unable to easily handle on my own.
Bottomline, all you need is a passport, money, and a plane ticket. Throw in some hotel reservations and you're good to go. Read a guidebook on the plane ride over ;-) suze

Well, what a surprise, travel agents want to sell you something that will enable them to make their house payment. They make their living selling things.
At this point in time, the OP doesn't want what the agent is selling, simple as that.
