tour of northern Germany
 

I need a tour of northern Germany from 4/29/09- 5/10/09.
Any help would be appreciated.

A couple of weeks ago, we had a good thread about this topic. But I cannot find it anymore. The search function is &%$§!

You can visit some villages in the surroundings of Hamburg. Büsum is a nice small town with shrimp boats, Husum is similar. You may go to the island of Sylt, in particular the village of Kampen which boasts grass-covered houses, beaches and sand dunes. If you want to explore a medieval city center take the train to Bremen and/or to Lübeck (both one hour train ride from Hamburg).
Mecklenburg offers some beautiful towns, especially Schwerin with an old town and a magnificent castle overlooking the lake. Berlin is not exactly a village, but it is just 3 hours away from Hamburg and certainly one of Europe's most fascinating cities.
If you want to leave the typical American tourist's beaten path go to the Münsterland (2 1/2 hours by train from Hamburg). There are many neat villages and lots of castles from medieval fortresses (Lüdinghausen) to magnificent , Versailles-style chateaux (Nordkirchen). The region's capital, Münster, is a medieval town with a great cathedral, a gorgeous medieval city hall (where the Westphalian Treaty was negotiated which ended the war of 30 years) and an open-air farm-house museum. The small village Nottuln has an antique blueprint workshop. From there it is just another two hours to Amsterdam which offers good flight options back to the U.S.
You can do the cities easily by train. However, if you want to visit villages, a rental car would be more convenient.

Hi habroms; If I were dong this trip, I would stay in Berlin four days. One day a tour trip to Potsdam. Leaving Berlin with a rented car I would stay three days in Lubeck, a great city.[three hours from the airport] From there you could visit coastal towns/cities such as Wismar. Then two days in Hamburg, another great city. Then to Wolfenbuttel for two days. Perhaps visits to Luneburg and Celle on the way to Wolfenbuttel. From Wolfenbuttel, visit to Goslar. Last night at the airport or somewhere close. Perhaps Brandenburg. An easy one hour to the airport. ENJOY Iris
