Tour in Rome that only does churches or
 

Is there a company that does tours only of churches in Rome? Not asking about St. Peters only other older ones within the city.

I wouldn't do a tour. I"d get a good map...I think Streetwise Rome and ARtwise Rome are good maps, find them in a big bookstore with a travel section. On one of these maps churches are listed. You can visit them on your own. rome is a good size city, and you should pick out a couple churches that you especially want to visit, and choose a hotel located near them, if that is really your focus. Don't miss St. peter's! Amazing!

I don't know any specific names, but there are many religious groups that organize tours to Rome and anywhere else in Europe. And many businesses secular in nature also conduct tours with an emphasis on churches. I would just do a google search and see what comes up. Or you can talk to folks with your hometown churches.

Hi Maryanne, a good friend of mine talked to her local church and found out from them all the tours available.
She also had a Catholic guidebook which was recommended by her Priest which had different tours of churches.

I had the BEST private tour of early churches in Rome that included Cosmos & Damian, St Mary Antiqua, San Clemente, led by Liz at Scala Reale. They offer another one with St. Mary Maggoria and St. John Laterno, I believe. IT was so good, WELL worth the money, if you are interested in early church history, check this tour out.

Are the churches in several areas that they provide transportation or is it a walking tour in one area? Also when I look at their prices the total is for so many people like 6. If there are only 2 of you and they do not have the number how do they charge for that?

Yes, there is a Christian Church Tour. It is a bus tour (can't remember name of Company, but it is in every hotel).

It is actually very good...think it was about $25. We took it for a couple of reasons. One was that they ended up at the Catacombs. You can obviously get to Catacombs cheaper than $25. However, thing I liked about the tour was the Guide's explanation of things at Santa Maria Maggiore and San Giovanni in Laterano. It is the only tour I have ever taken in Italy and not disposed to do such, but I thought this was worth the money. There is also the ArcheoBus (hop on/off) which is good. You are pretty much your guide on that one.

One Church you won't find on a tour is San Pietro in Vincoli which is a 5 minute walk up the hill from the Coliseum. Michelangelo's Moses is there and hard to believe. There are two other churches not on tour about 100 meters from the Piazza Navona which both have original Caravaggios, one is Sant' Agostino and the other San Luigi dei Francesi. The second church has 3 of St. Matthew. They are in an alcove in the left rear of the church...put a few coins in the box and the lights are projected on the paintings. Enjoy!

The early Christian church tour we took, most of the churches were in forum area and when we needed to go to San Clemente she had us just jump on the bus. We didn't pay for the bus and she didn't say anything about it, so we probably would have been in trouble if they'd asked for a ticket...

The tour I took was a private tour $250 for one, or six, or how manyin your group. It turned out to be just my daughter and I because my son didn't want to come.

Now I know when you are planning your trip, spending that much money on a tour seems extravagent, it did to me, but I don't know how much you spend on entertainment, but I've been known to spend close to $200 for a 2 hour Stars on Ice skating show for two tickets. This was a four hour entertaining and educational experience. And well worth it.

Joelle, if I ever paid $250 for a tour, I'd expect to be at least given drinks, a sound and light show, dinner, a rosary blessed by the Pope and relic or two!

Well, I am not an extravagant person by any means, but I got more out of that tour than I would a show and dinner. And if I could do it over, I'd pay that for a tour of the vatican.
