Tour company for Greece
We are considering taking a tour of Greece in June 2003. We've used Cosmos in the past for tours and wonder if anyone has used them or could recommend another budget tour company to Greece.

Dear Sherry
Take a look at Globus. I have taken a couple tours with them and I was very pleased. I have compared alot of different tour companies and they really give a great tour for the money. Happy traveling.
Peace, Raven

I took a Cosmos tour to Greece in September 2000--don't know if it's the same one you are considering. It began and ended in Athens and included Delphi, Meteora/Kalambaka, Olympia, and the islands of Mykonos, Santorini, and Paros. Overall, this was a good value for the money, although a couple of the hotels left something to be desired.
The reason this tour is so much cheaper than many Greek Island tours is because they use ferries, not cruise ships. This usually works out okay, but ferries are much more susceptible to weather-related delays than cruise ships, so you could end up waiting several hours for your ferry to depart. When I was there, there were two tragic ferry accidents, one in which over 80 people were killed. As a result, the government grounded dozens of ferries and passenger ships for inspection. We waited for nearly 12 hours for our ferry to the port of Piraeus, and eventually ended up hitching a ride on a cruise ship (our tour guide was very enterprising!) Granted, this was an extremely unusual circumstance and you are unlikely to run into this problem to the same degree. However, I tried to do a day trip to Delos two days in a row and was unable to do so because of the weather. (This was prior to the ferry accidents and had nothing to do with the government grounding the ferries).
I have traveled with Cosmos and Globus eight times. Despite the problems with the ferries, I think the Greek tour is a good one and I recommend it.
