It really depends where you wnat to go on your day tour - what are your likes/preferences/dislikes? I suggest you use Google to search for "day trip from London to (fill in the blank) and see what it comes up with. Some places - like Windsor and Hampton Court can easily be reached by train or bus for self-exploration as another option to an organized tour. I've really enjoyed both those places enough to return on subsequent trips to England.

We used Golden Tours, www.goldentours.co.uk and were happy and Frames Rickards is another major company, www.framesrickards.co.uk. But as Daisy54 said train travel is easily done on your own. If this is a first trip you may be a little nervous going on your own or not know where you'd like to go which makes a tour good.
The downside is you won't get to spend much time at your choosen destination.
Hampton Court is a personal favorite of mine.

Evan Evans is another well known tour company. We have done a couple of day trips with them. They have a lot of choices, but if your destination is one easily reached by train you will save quite a bit of money. On the other hand, the guides are good and will give you a lot of information you may not know on your own.

After my trip, my best advice would be to make your first stop the visitors center on Regent Street just south of Piccadily Circus. There are tons of tours... all kinds of prices, and options. I opted to go it on my own, only because it seemed most of the tours were packed with older folks, and I didn't wanted to neither bore my 9 year old, or bother the other s in the group. We took a bus on our own to Oxford and then grab a tour bus once in the town. While in town we took the Orignial Bus tour which was great. Take the yellow line theres an actual guide vs the recording. Its the hop on and off... we took the whole yellow route the switch over to the red and got off at attractions we wanted to see... The Tower of Lonodon, London Eye, Westminister, St Pauls, Globe Theater, and Tate Modern. Lots to say... anyone wanting advice feel free to get in touch.
