TORN! Latin Quarter or Eiffell Tower
 

Never been to Paris. Will be there in July. The Latin Quarter sounds like a lot of fun, very happening place. The thought of having a view of the Eiffel Tower sound great too. If we stay close to the Eiffel Tower we were thinking Hotel Relais Bosquet. Any favorites in either place? We would like to not go over $200.00 Euros.<BR>Thank You!!!

I, too, was torn on my first trip, but was glad that we decided on the Latin Quarter. We really enjoyed the area, it was close to a lot of sights, and we figured in the end we probably wouldn't actually end up with a &quot;view&quot; of the tower from our room anyhow (had we chosen that area).<BR><BR>I'd offer hotel suggestions, but we tend to stay in places around 100 euros per night so we can spend more on doing things in the city.<BR><BR>Good luck!<BR>

Hi<BR> I would recommend that you stay in the 6th or 5th.<BR> You can see the Eiffel Tower from just about anywhere outdoors.

If you plan on doing lots of sightseeing, you won't be spending much time in the room at all.<BR><BR>We stayed in the 1st and just loved that area and would recommend it highly. <BR>

Avenue Bosquet and the surrounding neighborhood of the 7th are very nice. The pricey apartments are wonderful there and it's a bit more &quot;calm&quot; than the Quartier Latin. You may find the brasseries a bit more expensive here. If you have that view of the Eiffel Tower, it means a lot to you, it's under 200 EUR a night and you want to have that, then by all means. Paris has EXCELLENT public transportation from that area. The Metro was designed so no place in the city would be more than 250 metres from any station. You'll be in a rather upscale neighborhood and it's very convenient to the buses too. The largest Metro station will be La Motte-Picquet-Grenelle in your vicinity and if you take the number 10 to Gare d'Austerlitz, you'll be at Mabillon quite quickly. At Mabillon you exit right out at Blvd Saint-Germain in the middle of all the Latin Quarter action, close to Odeon, Luxembourg Palace and Gardens, rue de Rennes, Place St-Sulpice, Place de Furstemburg. I think you made a good choice. Take the 92 bus by Ecole Militaire that will stop at the Arc de Triomphe or the longer bus 80 over the Seine to the Rive Droite, along Avenue Montaigne to the Champs-Elysees. It's quite scenic. The 80 continues all the way through the 8th (taking some of the grands boulevards, part of the 17th and into the 18th all the way to the back of the Sacre Coeur. All you have to do is walk up the hill from the terminus which is the City Hall of the XVIII arrondissement. Have fun!

I have not stayed in the 7th but I did stay in the 15th, which abuts the 7th. I would not want to stay near the Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel) again and would strongly recommend the 5th-6th for better ambience and activity. <BR><BR>Have fun.

You all made very good points. I think I'm settled on the Latin Quarter. Any hotel suggestions from $150 - $200 Euros? I've been looking through past posts and still working on finding that one hotel.

Stay in the Latin Qtr. (5th dist.). It's got alot more to see and experience than the Eiffel Tower area. The area around the tower is nice but not as abundant with shops and restaurants as the 5th dist. When we visited the Latin Qtr. we stayed in a moderate hotel called the Abbatial St. Germain on Blvd. St. Germain. It's a small hotel, rooms are typically small except for the triples, baths are modern, continental breakfast is good and served in their basement cellar, and the staff is efficient and helpful. The rates are in the mid 100's.

I loved the Latin Quarter even though some say it has become to touristy. I stayed at an inexpensive place on rue de la huechette (which depending on who you ask is the worst offender in terms of the tourist population...) and loved it. I was within walking distance of the louvre, musee d'orsay,centre georges pompideau, Notre Dame, and others. The place I stayed was only 60E a night, but I suspect you are probably looking for something a little more upscale. We stayed at the Hotel St. Germain in the 6th, 88 Rue de Bac (150.00 euros) for a double room. Fairly small but cute room w/ french doors that opened out to Rue de Bac below. Highly recommend it and the area.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. You have saved my sanity. It gets a little overwelming when there is so much to choose from and know nothing about the area.

We definitely prefer the Latin Quarter. It's a great location &amp; we like to eat at restaurants on Rue Mouffetard.<BR>One time we stayed near the Eifel Tower but kept going back to the 5th to eat. (The only place nearby was Rue Clar, which isn't very extensive.)

The Artus Hotel looks really cool. A little expensive. Anyone experience this hotel?

- Julie - what is the name of the hotel you stayed at. It sounds like something I am looking for. Does it have a web page? Was it very noisy at night?

<BR><BR>We enjoy the 6th . . We have used the Hotel de Fleurie, just off St. Germaine. It is fairly quite, but just a half block from the main street. <BR><BR>Rooms are pleasant, with showers and breakfast, although we usually went to nearby cafe's to eat. <BR><BR>Staff is efficient and friendly. Hi Dollface --<BR><BR>The Holiday Inn St Germain de Pres has a very good location (easy walking to both St Germain des Pres and Montparnasse), and you can see the Eiffel Tower from several rooms on the 5th and 6th floors. This hotel is a bit less charming than a typical small Paris hotel, but nowhere near as faceless as a typical US Holiday Inn.
