What the heck does topping mean?

does this question ever stop being asked!!!!!!! It's almost humorous, if it weren't becoming so annoying.

It's when someone helpful finds an old thread and posts on it so that it rises to the top. Please fodors, make this an FAQ

No problem. But I was a hair's breadth from doing what jeez did. It does get asked about three times a week I think. Mind you I never read the FAQs on a web site eitehr:)

maybe each morning, someone should top an old top of the topping subject~that will answer all the topless who want to ask daily about topping.

Everyone has forgotton when they first learned how to use their computer and did not know the jargon, what it was like. Many of us asked that question, danb, don't let them get you down.

I thought there was no stupid question. Why are some people so quick to critize others? TTT.

Why do people top? The topped post never stays near the original post and who knows when the original poster will get back to their computer to look at the topped post.

If you also post to the original thread saying "I've topped Thread X for you," the person will know to look for Thread X and know approximately what time it was topped.

tonite is the first time i have checked fodors in almost a year. after seeing that capo, along with every other sarcastic no life, is posting hogwash to every topic i have searched, i remember why i stopped using it for information. you people need a chatroom, not a message board!

Good answer, jahoulih... But it is very fleeting. I wish more people would cite the URL of a thread. Two weeks or even two years later, that makes any thread instantly, permanently easy to retrieve. Topping does not. I top answers - - one of the chief reasons is that a newbie might never believe that a message can be 200 messages "deep" in just 24 hours after it was first posted - - and conclude that it has disappeared. Sure. I try to teach about this often - - but it can't be mentioned often enough. Every thread has a unique URL ("web address"). It NEVER changes. You can get it by right clicking onthe header (on the lefthand column), then "copy shortcut" - - or copy link location in Netscape. This puts onto your "clipboard" - - you don't immediately see anything. I did that for this thread before I started this particular post. You can insert it anywhere with Control-V. For this thread the URL is http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=1347324&numresponses=24&s tart=0 You can actually shorten this by deleting everything from "&numresponses on, like so: http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=1347324 Citing the URL for a URL means another reader can always find it, topped or not. I also frequently top, as I figure that a lot of people don't understand what this is all about. There was a time that this forum supported URL's as hot links, but it was "undone" just a few weeks after it started. I sure wish they would bring it back - - even if only for URLs linked directly to the fodors.com site.
