Topping??

What the heck does topping mean?

jeez Feb 17th, 2002 01:02 PM

does this question ever stop being asked!!!!!!! It's almost humorous, if it weren't becoming so annoying.

Sheila Feb 17th, 2002 01:02 PM

It's when someone helpful finds an old thread and posts on it so that it rises to the top.<BR><BR>Please fodors, make this an FAQ

danb Feb 17th, 2002 01:28 PM

Sorry to bother you, Jeez - if I knew I wouldn't ask. <BR><BR><BR>Thanks, Shelia, for your answer.

Capo Feb 17th, 2002 01:53 PM

Topping. It's not just a village in the Cotswolds. :~)

Sheila Feb 17th, 2002 01:53 PM

No problem. But I was a hair's breadth from doing what jeez did. It does get asked about three times a week I think.<BR><BR>Mind you I never read the FAQs on a web site eitehr:)

toppette Feb 17th, 2002 01:59 PM

maybe each morning, someone should top an old top of the topping subject~that will answer all the topless who want to ask daily about topping.

xxx Feb 17th, 2002 03:18 PM

Everyone has forgotton when they first learned how to use their computer and did not know the jargon, what it was like. Many of us asked that question, danb, don't let them get you down.

silly Feb 17th, 2002 03:55 PM

xxx.I think everyone has just forgotten their sense of humor.

ttt Feb 17th, 2002 04:03 PM

topping

Capo Feb 17th, 2002 04:26 PM

I'm not sure if this is common in the rest of Italy, but one of the best toppings I've ever had is panna, the delicious whipped cream they artfully place on top of gelato in Rome. <BR><BR>http://www.pastrywiz.com/season/italy9.htm

sillier Feb 17th, 2002 04:46 PM

or has too much.

Leslie Feb 17th, 2002 04:48 PM

Capo, you're a real hoot, for that matter, just a topper.

fan Feb 17th, 2002 04:55 PM

Oui, Capo is le Tops~

Tired Feb 17th, 2002 05:03 PM

I thought there was no stupid question.<BR>Why are some people so quick to critize others?<BR><BR>TTT.<BR>

x Feb 17th, 2002 06:22 PM

Why do people top? The topped post never stays near the original post and who knows when the original poster will get back to their computer to look at the topped post.

jahoulih Feb 17th, 2002 06:27 PM

If you also post to the original thread saying "I've topped Thread X for you," the person will know to look for Thread X and know approximately what time it was topped.

tally ho Feb 17th, 2002 06:29 PM

tonite is the first time i have checked fodors in almost a year. after seeing that capo, along with every other sarcastic no life, is posting hogwash to every topic i have searched, i remember why i stopped using it for information. you people need a chatroom, not a message board!

Rex Feb 17th, 2002 06:46 PM

Good answer, jahoulih...<BR><BR>But it is very fleeting. I wish more people would cite the URL of a thread. Two weeks or even two years later, that makes any thread instantly, permanently easy to retrieve. Topping does not.<BR><BR>I top answers - - one of the chief reasons is that a newbie might never believe that a message can be 200 messages "deep" in just 24 hours after it was first posted - - and conclude that it has disappeared.<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>

MsAttitude Feb 17th, 2002 06:56 PM

Gee, tallyho, I bet you've been missed

topper Feb 17th, 2002 07:06 PM

Bye bye ,tally ho, don't feel bad about being away longer this time!

Capo Feb 17th, 2002 07:14 PM

Hogwash. It's not just another village in the Cotswolds. :~)

hunt Feb 17th, 2002 07:23 PM

funny-tally ho was quite pleasant to another woman about wearing jeans to Paris, but goes on this thread to insult Capo.<BR>The foxes are running-- Tally ho!!run run ! watch out for that hole! Oops, she fell in! <BR>Toodle oooo, tally hooooooo!!!

hunted Feb 17th, 2002 07:26 PM

well Hunt, he does go on too much,<BR>a little goes a long way.

creme fraiche to Rex Feb 17th, 2002 09:43 PM

Rex; Please explain this bit about posting to the original thread, the URL, etc? How does one do this?

Rex Feb 18th, 2002 03:53 AM

Sure. I try to teach about this often - - but it can't be mentioned often enough.<BR><BR>Every thread has a unique URL ("web address"). It NEVER changes. You can get it by right clicking onthe header (on the lefthand column), then "copy shortcut" - - or copy link location in Netscape.<BR><BR>This puts onto your "clipboard" - - you don't immediately see anything. I did that for this thread before I started this particular post. You can insert it anywhere with Control-V.<BR><BR>For this thread the URL is<BR><BR>http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=1347324&numresponses=24&s tart=0<BR><BR>You can actually shorten this by deleting everything from "&numresponses on, like so:<BR><BR>http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=1347324<BR><BR>Citing the URL for a URL means another reader can always find it, topped or not. I also frequently top, as I figure that a lot of people don't understand what this is all about.<BR><BR>There was a time that this forum supported URL's as hot links, but it was "undone" just a few weeks after it started. I sure wish they would bring it back - - even if only for URLs linked directly to the fodors.com site.<BR>

ttt Feb 18th, 2002 07:12 AM

topping, of course...<BR>

creme fraiche topping Feb 18th, 2002 09:42 AM
