What's your opinion of the top, high-end, fine-dining restaurant in Rome?

Please name the high-end restaurant in Rome that you feel is the best.

My favorite places in Rome are not what most would call top-end, so sorry I really don't have any real help for you. I tend to prefer the neighborhood trattorias or family run ristorantes.

Personally feel that if you go to any of the Piazzas surrounded by restaurants and just look for the ones that are reasonably decked out and relaxed you will not go far wrong, will get a taste for the environment and have good food without all the pomposity.

For me, dinner in the garden at Hotel de Russie was very memorable. Beautiful evening, delicious food (we had a tasting menu of lots of courses).

I've always enjoyed Agata e Romeo and Camponeschi. Slightly less expensive but with excellent food are Ditirambo, Alberto Ciarla and Paris. I disagree with the recommendation to look for restaurants around the piazzas. I have yet to find a restaurant on Piazza Navona or Piazza della Rotonda that isn't overpriced and mediocre.

We tried 2 Michelin one-stars.

The tasting menu at Il Convivio was fabulous but the atmosphere was extremely formal. (The only time I've experienced the handbag stool !)

The food at La Rosetta (seafood) was very nice but it's possibly a little too casual.

I felt the following two restaurants were worth it :

Unless you really want to pay alot to dine, it's not necessary to do so. As said already, some of the best restaurants are unpretentious and have non-famous names.

Going, but not until November. Already booked the flight.

Will be in Rome for 3 nights and then Florence for 4 or 5.

Staying with someone in an apartment in Florence.

Will be staying in a hotel in Rome (still trying to figure out where/what area/etc.). Looking for a nice place in a good area (close to nightlife, restaurants, etc.).

I must have led a sheltered life.
Can't tell you much about high-end dining, but the low end dining in Rome was pretty good. We tended to stick to the area where our apartment was - Monti - between the colosseum and the via nazionale, where there are lots of individually run restaurants, trattoria, etc.etc. The only bad meal we had in a week of eating out twice a day was in the one restaurant we found in a guide. WE looked for places with fairly short menus, no japanese translations, family run. If you stick to these criteria, it's hard to go wrong. Lots of OPs talk about successfully following the suggestions of the waiter - we did that one night and instead of the mixed anti-pasti we were expecting , got baby octipus cooked 6 different ways. and they were all great!
I'd go for the low-end every time.

Though not high-end, try Il Ciak in Trastevere for some authentic food. Hope you're not a vegetarian.
