Top Places to Stay in London?
If you had a long weekend 3 nights in London and planned to travel with a friend (30 yr old F and 30 yr old M)... where would you stay- please include area, reason and hotel name if available... (budget of 75gbp/150USD per night)?
Including any thoughts on the following: - K West Hotel & SPA in Kesington - Grange Strathmore Hotel in Kesington/Chelsea - London Bridge Hotel THANK YOU! |
I stayed at the K west about 4 years ago. Rooms are TINY. Smaller than usual Europe city rooms. Spa was just ok but main problem I had w/ it is it's pretty far from the main loop and not alot close by. The next time i was in London I stayed at The Cumberland which has a fantastic location.

for that budget you might be better off going the Priceline route. Check out biddingfortravel.com and betterbidding.com for advice and info re what current bids are successful.

My favorite budget hotel in London is the Travellers Inn County Hall. Location is right next to the London Eye, short walk to Big Ben and a tube stop. It is also directly on a bus route which makes it very convenient. This hotel shares a building with a much higher priced Marriott. The Marriott gets the nice water view, Travellers Inn gets... no view. We found the rooms to be spacious, clean and basic.

Just to clarify - the hotel CathyF recommends is the Premier Travel Inn (not Travellers)

We booked at the Strathmore a few years ago and were in our room for about 15 mintes before we decided to look elsewhere!
It seemed to have a lot of "permanent residents"! The rooms were NOT CLEAN! Hair in the bathtubs really turned me off. Our room was a firetrap! A firedoor one way and no exit from the other end.Having been in a hotel fire in New Orleans I did not want to repeast the experience. We had to stay there 1 night before we could move. They may have improved but I would nver stay there or recommend it. |
I'd stay in one of the Bloomsbury hotels like St. Margaret's www.stmargaretshotel.co.uk
or Arran House www.arranhotel-london.com . Clean, friendly, in your price range if you don't mind sharing a bathroom. We enjoy the old fashioned full English breakfast, lovely neighborhood near British Museum. Near bus line to Trafalger Square. |
Look into hotels in Earls Court. It's a wonderful neighborhood with restaurants and markets, and a metro station that will whisk you off to anywhere else in London. Can't recommend a hotel because we rented an apartment. Good luck and have fun.

You could try this place in Paddington -
http://www.rhodeshotel.co.uk/default.asp I haven't stayed there but booked it recently for family and they said it was fine, friendly owners and decent shower etc. Paddington is good for transport links, close to Hyde Park, lots of cheap eating in the area (by London standards!!). Double room was 80 pound per night incl. breakfast and taxes. Kay |
the K West is definitly stretching things saying it is in Kensington - it is out beyond Holland Park in Shephard's Bush. Not a convenient location and pretty far west.
I personally wouldn't stay in any of them - and would not stay in Earl's Court unless it was really cheap on Priceline, nor in Paddington at all. If you don't want to try Priceline, and if those hotels are your only 3 choices -- then I'd personally choose the London Bridge. it is right at a tube station, a mainline train station, is a block from the river, walking distance to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, the Globe, Tate Modern and all of the south bank. The Strathmore's location is very good but from jody's description unless there has been a major overhaul/management change I'd avoid that one. And judging from tripadvisor - it sounds like things have not changed much. The reviews are a very mixed bag but lots of negatives. By comparison - the London Bridge has mostly great reviews. |
oops - I meant to say "I personally wouldn't stay in any of them except maybe the London Bridge - and would not . . . . "
