Top 5 churches in Naples?

We'll be spending a couple of days in the heart of the old part of Naples in June. The research we've done so far has revealed an incredible wealth of interesting, beautiful and otherwise notable religious buildings within easy walking of where we're staying (by Donnaregina Vecchia, itself a notable site).

Right now, I've got about 20 more "must-sees" than I need. And don't even get started with the castles, palaces and museums!

Please, list for me your top 5 to 10 religious buildings to see in the heart of old Naples. Grazie!

Hi mr,

The Capella Sansevero, with "The Veiled Christ".

The Capella Sansevero, with "The Veiled Christ". This is definitely a MUST SEE. I was amazed!

The cloister of Santa Chiara.

The various "gugli" (sp?), the monuments in front of a few important churches; they resemble confections of whipped cream with statues on top. I would classify them under "interesting" rather than "beautiful"...

Yep, no doubt, those are on the REAL must-see list. As are (most probably) the Duomo, San Gregorio Armeno, Gesu Nuovo, San Lorenzo Maggiore, Certosa San Martino, and the aforementioned Donnaregina Vecchia.

I should probably stop right there.

What Ira said:

The Capella Sansevero, with "The Veiled Christ".

If there is only ONE church you see in Naples, then this should be the one. The veiled Christ is one of the most emotive and shocking piece of art I have ever experienced. In addition to the Christ, there are other wonderful sculptures.
Thanks to both Ira and Mimi, I made sure this was a priority on my trip to Naples in January. A word to the wise, it is not always open when it should be open (not unusual in Italy) so give yourself a few opportunities to see it, just in case.

BTW, I assume you are also going to visit the Archeological museum - don't miss it.

regards Ger

You assume correctly, Ger. Plus the Castle Nuovo, Palazzo Reale, Teatro San Carlo, and possibly the Capodimonte museum (not sure I can drag the 12-year-old into that many museums).

Whew! That barely leaves time for pizza and gelato!
