1) Not being at work.
2) Realizing just how great living in American really is.
3) Seeing all those annoying Americans in Ireland wearing Aran sweaters and trying to find where their great aunt twice removed on their mother's side was buried, but never figuring out that the Republic of Ireland is a separate country from Northern Ireland.
4) Hanging in the pub with my friends that I only get to see a couple of times a year, drinking myself silly, getting a gravy chip or curry, going home and watching bad television while I eat aforementioned chips, go to sleep, don't worry about hangover because I don't have to go to work in the morning, get up around 1 p.m. Spend 3 hours eating breakfast (great bread!), showering, and watching mid-day soaps, get in the obligatory visits with relatives, head back to pub. Repeat.

1) If someone says "Have a nice day", it is legal to hit them.
2) (same as 1 really) Service people don't pretend to like you until something goes wrong, then get really sniffy really fast.
3) When your car breaks down, it's great fun trying to understand simple automotive mechanics spoken at 400 foreign words per minute.
I love to travel in Europe because in my opinion it is the most varied part of the world. The scenery is quite often breathtaking, the historic cities are a joy to explore and there are so many different language groups and cultures living side by side. One does not have to travel thousands of miles to get anywhere interesting and the transport system is, generally speaking, very good. I live in London but have spent a considerable part of my life in Australia and the South Pacific having lived in Papua New Guinea for 16 years. In that part of the world although it is beautiful in its own way, the climate is often inhospitable and journey times are long between cities. The biggest drawback for me was the distance from Europe.
I am curious about those people who say they had to travel in Europe to realise that the USA was the best place to live in the world. Is this just being understandably patriotic or are there aspects of American life that are so superior to that of Europe? I really am interested to know.

1. The beautiful architecture oozing history -- it's so humbling.

2. Being able to be out and about walking all day instead of sitting behind a desk in a four-wall box.

3. The unique perspective it gives me about life -- there really is life outside the U.S., and people have extremely different life-styles than we do here: different views on sex, money, family life, etc.

Great question! And great answers!

My husband's top reason: I like to play with my passport.

My top three: The fun of being an alien, exquisite food, and (like Kat a couple of replies back), experiencing the reality of everything you've read about and studied in school.

1. Art, architecture, history and culture that the U.S. just doesn't have

2. Riding trains. Great to be out of the car for a change and able to take advantage of such clean, safe, reliable public transportation

3. Experiencing a way of life that is different than my own -- less rushed, more civilized, steeped more in culture and tradition than the constant pressure to make a buck

3.

3..
