Top 10 Munich sites
 

I saw a posting for top 10 Vienna. We are planning both next year (xmas time, I think). Would you all be so kind to suggest the top 10 things to do in Munich? We are first-timers, love to go out to dinner, bars, museums (can't spend all day, but like it) and the sites. Thank you!<BR>

Lisa, there are lots of things to do in Munich.<BR>You could:<BR>Go to the &quot;Residenz&quot; - the royal palace of the Wittelsbacher dynasty (read up on mad King Ludwig first?<BR>Stroll through the Englische Garten.<BR>Visit the Deutsche Museum, especially if you're into science stuff.<BR>Visit the Pinakothek art gallery.<BR>Check th Hypobank Gallery for special art exhibitions.<BR>Take a walk over the Viktualienmarkt (fruit, vegetables, meat and lots of exotic spices)<BR>Go to an opera or a ballet at the State Opera House.<BR>Watch the clockwork shepherds dancing on the tower of the Rathaus.<BR>Go to Nymphenburg Palace.<BR>Go for a meal in the Aubergene or another fancy restaurant.<BR>Have a beer or something to eat in the Hofbraeuhaus (not everybody's cup of tea - downstairs it's a bit smelly)<BR>Go to Schwabing for the swingy atmosphere.<BR>Outside the city there are also lots of interesting places and sights.<BR>Perhaps if you type &quot;Bavaria&quot; into the search, you'll get some more suggestions.<BR>Viel Spass!

Would add:<BR>Have lunch or dinner at Donisl - a classic since the middle ages. <BR>Visit Alois Dallmyer - the most incredible deli/foof court in the world. <BR>Visit a beer hall other than Hofbrauhaus<BR>so you can experience it with locals rather than Japanese tourists.

Add BMW museum, having weisswurst and weizenbier for breakfast, and the Asam Kirche.

I forgot to recommend having dinner in the Olympia Tower. It revolves very slowly, so you don't notice the movement. Beneath you, you can see the the city lights of Munich twinkling away.

I would only go the the Hofbrauhaus just to say you been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Go to the Augustiner Keller beer garden near the main train station. They have the best beer in Munich. The food's not bad either.

Lived there for 18 mths finishing last summer and agree pretty much with Meg.<BR>Would suggest Andechs am Dom, Weinstrasse 7 - behind Cathedral much more than Augustiner or Hofbrau - this is much smaller place and really one popular with locals as beer and food especially regarded as superior. Hofbrauhaus in my experience had far greater numbers of obese middle aged German male tourists (especially on weekends)and stag weekend Brits as well as evening youth hostellers than Japanese tourists (where Honolulu has a much greater percentage as does Vienna where I live now). I would say that compared to other cities Schwabing is really not that swinging - a lot of the youngsters go to Ostbahnhof where there 50 odd clubs and bars in a former factory site (some years ago a mayor made sure that the noisier places moved there)- if you are into raves go, if you are not , avoid like the plague. A really buzzing restaurant -easily the busiest (even Monday nights) I ever went to in in Munich is a Spanish tapas bar - Casa de Tapas- on the corner of Amalienstrasse and Adalbertstrasse near Universitat U bahn in Schwabing, great value place for a trendy restaurant (but certainly not dominated by the Schicki-Micki (too much money show offs of Munich). If you want a nice day trip without going out of Munich area, take the U bahn or train to Starnberg or Tutzing and walk along Starnberger See (Tutzing is better for longer walk as promenade stops after short distance at Starnberg).

hi lisa, munich is just a fantastic city to visit, escspecially if you like visiting museums, going out and having a good time in a city.<BR>the city has a own web-site, with information of all museums, art galleries and local events, I would recommend to search for that side, it is really helpfull.
