Too Much Thinking.....

I am thinking of taking a trip, but I am not sure yet. I guess it comes down to the place that I decide to go. You see, if I decide to go to a place that I don't really like, then I would probably not go.

Although I may go anyway, just to see if I actually hate the place or not. Perhaps I might just dislike the place, wherever it is, so that would be better than hating it, and that would be a plus.

If I pick a place that I like, then I might go, but then again, somebody else might like it too, and there would be too many people there, all liking the same place. I would hate that. But going to a place I like would also depend on the cost. What do you think the budget should be for a place like that? How much are the hotels there? If it is too costly, then I will maybe not go (I'm not sure), and maybe instead go to a place I don't want to go to since nobody would probably want to go there, and it would be cheaper, maybe. In which case I will need some company, as my wife might not go with me if it is a nasty place. Not that I am into nasty places, but hey, if it is cheap and I hate it, then it fits that it would be a nasty place.

And when do you think I should go? This year or next year? Will the weather be better there next year, you think? I mean, it might be warmer, with all the icebergs melting and stuff, so that would be cool.

I am thinking of next year because of that, but then again, it might be more expensive to go there next year because prices always go up, so maybe I should go someplace else than there. Maybe this year. Or maybe next year. Not sure. So, someplace else you think?

But, what if the someplace else isn't as nice? What if I hate it? What if I hate it and it is nasty AND it ends up costing more?

You know what? I think I won't travel any more. But, then again, I hate to just stay in one place. I hate it here. I would rather be there. I just have to decide on where.

Marv, make your better half to do all thinking, reservations, decisions. Then you'll have somebody else to blame.

Are you thinking now whether or not to follow my advice and if I've done the same for my husband?

indytravel Jan 27th, 2005 03:52 PM

Marv, Faina is right. Go to work. Make some money. Let the better half make the important decisions. :-)

Grandmere1 Jan 27th, 2005 03:57 PM

And what if you end up at the second best hill town in Tuscany or Provence instead of the very best?

P_M Jan 27th, 2005 04:01 PM

Marv, you are really scaring me. You sound EXACTLY like my husband!! He was just now on the computer, and I think he was the one who posted this!! I'm going now to tell him to quit fooling around and stay off my Fodor's board....

BTW, my husband's father is named Marvin. No kidding!!

Scarlett Jan 27th, 2005 04:10 PM

Marv,
I think you might be right.
I have to think about it some more..but you are most likely doing the right thing, I think.

Infotrack Jan 28th, 2005 06:20 AM

Faina, EXCELENT advice (I think). It is ALWAYS good to have someone else to blame, especially the better half.

I kinda wonder if you follow your own advice and if you do the same for your DH. Ummmm... do you?

P_M, as far as I know (I think) I am not your husband. Of course, if he is really handsome, tall, awesomely sexy, huge ummmm... "package," sparkling personality, then I might be your husband. I'll have to check on that and get back to you.

And, indy, I suspect, that maybe, perhaps, you just might be right too. I guess.

Grandmere, I would hate ending up at the second best place of anywhere, but then again, maybe I would like the second best place the best. Maybe even the worst place would be best, making it the best place. But then again.....

SuzieC Jan 28th, 2005 06:26 AM

The best. I'll quit caring about this when I quit chuckling about all this.

And some people wonder why others LIKE to travel solo... or, got divorced... Marv? Was I married to you?

Tries2PakLite Jan 28th, 2005 06:34 AM

Marv -- exactly.

Scarlett Jan 28th, 2005 06:50 AM

You know, Infotrack, after reading this a second time, I would like to say that I think you are right (I am an agreeable sort) and that Too Much Thinking is most likely not good for you, so you should stop now...( I am also a proponent for Not Thinking Too Much)
Have a good and thoughtless day~

Hi Marv,

I think you might be right, but on second thought, I'm not quite sure if I am right.

Infotrack Jan 28th, 2005 07:10 AM

Scarlett, I am thinking of surgery to help me end my thinking. I think that might be a good idea, you think? I went to my brain surgeon, the most famous proctologist in the world, I think, and he says he thinks he can surgically sever any thoughts I have from the real world.

He already has his instruments lined up and ready to go, including a slightly used speculum (nono, it will be used a bit differently with me), a LONG wire with a hook on the end to "capture" stray thoughts that he finds while rummaging around in there, a laser cutting tool to cauterize the blood vessels that nourish the thoughts, and a specially trained tunnelling rat to gnaw away at any remaining thoughts the hook cannot get to.

He says the "package" is safe, but I think I should worry about that a bit, especially since I may be married to P_M. Still have to check that out, I think. At least, I think so, anyway.

Infotrack, my husband says, with my planning we never get lost, but it takes on awful lot to get there ;)

Was it Marv in "Home Alone" who did not do the thinking?

Tallulah Jan 28th, 2005 08:24 AM

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahhah!!! That is perhaps the best summary/parody of this forum that I've read!!

Well done! My respect is hard to earn but you have it!

Patrick Jan 28th, 2005 09:19 AM

I'm tempted to respond to this post, but then I wonder, what if my response isn't understood? Or what if I respond and then realize I didn't include all my thoughts. Perhaps if I don't respond at all, this person will suffer because of the lack of information I could have provided but failed to. But what if I provide the information, the poster doesn't use it, and never realizes how valuable the information could have been to him. Then again, what if I did provide the information, he rejected it, then realized later he should have followed it, and suffered regrets. Wouldn't he be responsible for his sadness at not having followed it?
Maybe I just won't respond. I hope I won't feel guilty later. But then again, maybe a little guilt wouldn't hurt.

Robespierre Jan 28th, 2005 09:32 AM

Don't listen to these dolts!

Just get your cell phone from an ATM, buy a car to get from the airport to town, fly RyanAir from Heathrow to Gatwick, and ask here if anything is worth it.

suze Jan 28th, 2005 11:19 AM

Marv, You absolutelyl MUST take this trip as soon as possible!

Pick a city you hate for sure, the worst time of year for the weather at your destination, make reservations at an expensive hotel that is not very nice and poorly located. Also be sure to book extremely expensive plane tickets, on nearly bankrupt airlines with horrible routings, and too short or too long of airport layovers. Hopefully your luggage will be lost in transit.

Using this method, ANY little thing good that happens will be a huge improvement over your expectations for this trip. It's a win-win situation!!

Scarlett Jan 28th, 2005 01:14 PM

Infotrack,
I would suggest that you wait to have any procedures done at a surgeons and instead keep reading Fodors.
You will know in a year or three if you still have a stray thought and who knows, you might even like Thinking!
Of course, it has not happened to me yet, just ask the Trolls, but it could happen to someone as thoughtful as yourself.
And about the trip...I say, just go get on a plane, don't think about which one. Just go somewhere, don't think about where. Go with someone, don't think about who.
When you get there, just walk around, don't think about it.
Millions of people do this all the time.
If it works for them, it will surely work for you.
Thinking of you~Scarlett

Infotrack Jan 30th, 2005 06:19 AM

You all have offered excellent advice, and I am going to follow all of it. I think.

--Marv
PS: my proctologist says the brain surgey may need to be delayed anyway, as he needs to bring in a special electron microscope in order to find it.

Patrick Jan 30th, 2005 08:47 AM

I don't know. I'd think about letting the proctologist do that exam before going ahead with it.

fromMA Jan 30th, 2005 09:05 AM

Well if you schedule the proctology exam during your trip the trip is fully tax deductable.

Infotrack Aug 7th, 2005 07:29 AM

UPDATE!!

My proctologist has now performed the brain surgery. My brain has now been replaced with a round of Gouda cheese, and my thinking has cleared up, and is at the highest level it has ever been at.

I've decided, I WILL travel.....

....but I am just not sure where! Maybe I will go to a place that....

Oh well. I need to give it some more thought. OH OH!! Keep those crackers away from me!!!

--Marv

Infotrack Dec 5th, 2009 06:47 AM

New Update:

Over the years, the Gouda has gotten a bit, ummmm, moldy. But it still works. Sort of. I think.

Sassafrass Dec 5th, 2009 01:38 PM

Marv, you are already "there" in that new place, with the bad weather and too many people (the ones giving you all the bad thoughts). Please tell us your location so we don't accidentally book a flight there.

I am so glad you have decided you will travel again now that your thinking has been cleared up. No, no, don't do any more thinking for yourself. With the opinions of so many Fodorites, we will have you someplace else right away. Now, where should that be. . . .? Oh no, I think I've been afflicted with your disease. I need the name of your proctologist asap.

daveesl Dec 5th, 2009 04:50 PM

This is exactly what this board has been missing for so long, someone that may or may not know what they want. Someone that should or should not be allowed in public. Someone with a sense of humor.

sobster Dec 5th, 2009 08:29 PM

Marv, as many on this board have already stated in many, many posts, I ask you now, personally: (1) What is your budget? Give us an idea and we can help you better. (2) What are your interests? Give us an idea and we can help you better. (3)Where have you traveled previously? Give us an idea and...(4)Do you like the cold, the warmth, the snow, the skiing, the beaching etc? Give us an idea... and
I can assure you that wherever you decide to go it will be second best or even third best. At least compared to the experiences of most other posters. Thanks for your time and for giving me the opportunity to help another fellow traveler.

sobster Dec 5th, 2009 08:32 PM

Oh, and Marv? No advertising on this board!

lanejohann Dec 6th, 2009 03:15 AM

funny

deciding where to go gets harder each time

i spend my time agonising over the destinations like a kid at sweet shop
so many temptations but finances are limited
so many choices but how to get the best deal the best long lasting flavour that doesnt disappoint?
i want to try something new..but what if it doesnt measure up and yet to revisit a favourite is somehow not satisfying either

totally relate
and i am the better half so i make most of the decisions anyway
wish i were the lesser half so i could just relax and complain when things dont work out
