Most places won't let you do it on the actual stones anymore because of wer-and-tear and damages.

BUT in the crypt at St. Martin-in-the Fields, near the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, they have a complete service and setup with various materials to rub on and with, reproduction stones to rub, etc. If you plan your day right, you can go to one of the lovely musical services there, eat at their cafe-in-the-crypt, do some stone rubbings, and attend the flea market outside.

There's also a brass rubbing center at St. Pauls' Cathedral and if your travels take up to Scotland, there's one just off the Royal Mile in Chalmers Close, in a former church. It takes a little work to get a good image but it makes for a unique and interesting souvenir.

You can rub original brasses at Salisbury Cathedral. Go to their web site and click on visitors and FAQs. There's a phone number to call for further information.

My Mom did some rubbings at St Martin-in-the-Fields probably 30 yrs ago, had them beautifully framed and I have 2 hanging in my house. Always makes me think of her and I love them. I did see the work people were doing there. Someday I hope to have time to do this myself.

I am absolutely appalled that fodors would allow such an obscene and perverted thread to be posted.

Now who was it that stenciled replicas of her tombstone rubbings on her walls when she got home from her trip? Was it Cigalecanta or Kismet?

There is also brass rubbing (yes it's BRASS rubbing) at All Hallows by the Tower Church. Here's a website with more info

Calamari,

Certainly it was not ME!!!

I am Not in the bad habit of rubbing anyone tombostone..
The cemetery is a place to pray for the poor souls, not to step over the tombostone..

Calamari Nov 29th, 2003 09:51 AM

Sorry Kismet. It was a really cute and funny story. Thought it might have been you. I stand corrected and BTW I agree.
