Toll roads in France

We are thinking about renting a minivan in Lyon and driving to NIce, where we will drop the car off. I hae 2 questions:

Can you pay the tolls using a credit card, or do you need Euros?

Any recomendations as to an affordable rental agency?

Thanks

Bonjour Altajoe,

Yes, you can pay with most credit cards.

I've sent a thread on this very subject to the top (Autoroutes - how to pay).

Haven't i read on Fodors that U.S. credit cards often don't work in automatic machines in Europe, and especially in France, due to a lack of an embedded chip? Or can you pay manually with a charge card on autoroute, in which case the card apparently will be accepted. Me i don't know but that's what i've read. ???

Reading the thread florence gave i see Underhill answered this question - yes, he says, U.S. credit cards will be accepted at the automatic toll (peage) booths but not at many gas station pumps.

I saw that. Thanks.

Many Fodorites, me included, recommend www.autoeurope.com, a consolidator that finds you the best rate from among the rental companies with whom they do business. Book from home well in advance to get the best price.

We will be in France next month, and I'll post about using credit cards on the autoroute when I get back if we have any problems.
