Toledo in Mid February
 

We are planning a trip to Spain from February 15 to 24th. We are planning on making Toledo our base. We had a lot of other ideas, but it seems that Toledo is a good central location for many day trips. We are planning on seeing Segovia, Avila, Madrid, LaMancha. I guess I'm wondering if staying in one location and doing day trips is the smartest way to go. Also any other sights that you could recommend in this area would be appreciated. We do plan on renting a car. We our in our late 60's and love history, good food, wine, architecture. We will have our son with us to do the driving. This is our third time planning a trip to Spain - first it was Covid and then not getting a passport in time. Hopefully 3rd times is a charm. Not too concerned about the weather as we live in Wisconsin and it has to be better than here in February!

Welcome, yellowrose477! In all the trip reports I've read, Toledo is an overnight trip from Madrid. I have a TR only from Madrid* so others will have to help with firsthand info about day trips to the towns you mentioned.

For day trips from Toledo with a car, in under 2 hours, you have this from which to choose, depending on how far you want to travel--

You can reach the Monastery of El Escorial in the Comunidad de Madrid in an hour, 20 min.
Segovia in Castilla-León in 1 hr. 45 min. on the AP 41 toll road
Avila in Castilla-León would be a further drive
(don't try to do them in the same day, however!)

In La Mancha you could visit the windmills both in Consuegra, Campo de Criptana and the castle of Belmonte on the same drive.
the lovely lace-producing town of Almagro (a further drive south of about 1 hr. 40 min.), passing through Consuegra.
Almagro is one of my favorite Castilla La Mancha towns and has a lovely Parador and unique 17th century theater, the Corral de Comedias, on its Plaza Mayor.
An International Classic Theatre Festival is held there in July.

In the Comunidad de Madrid I would certainly visit the "little Versailles" Royal Palace and gardens of Aranjuez (45 min.) and/or
the very atmospheric town of Chinchón with its flower decked Plaza Mayor, surrounded by great places to dine (under over an hour).
Chinchón is a very popular weekend day trip from Madrid.

To visit Madrid from Toledo it's much easier to take the high-speed AVANT train, just under a 30-minute ride.

For La Mancha wine tourism, you can visit the winery of Jiménez Landi (DOP Méntrida). It´s about a 45 min. drive from Toledo.
