Toilets in San Marco

I have been to Venice 6 times in the last few years, and I am going back in August. Every time I am there, I see the signs near San Marco with an arrow that say "toilets", but I have never found them. I also read on another website (the one about recommended bathrooms around the world that someone posted here) that they are very clean. Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever found them, and can you tell me exactly where they are?

If you stand in front of the Doge's Palace facing the Grand Canal, the toilets are to your right along the Riva Schiavoni. If you look down on the pavement, follow the markers for WC. It ain't that hard sweetie. The toilets are clean and you have to pay.

Ah, are these those famous toilets that you can use for free if you buy the overpriced special Venice pass whatever it is called?

There are also toilets immediatly behind the piazza (at the opposite end to the basilica). Facing the Lois Vuitton shop go down the little alleyway on the right. They're upstairs. You also have to pay here. And yes, both of these toilets are the one's you get into for free if you have the Venice Card. You present you're card to the attendant, they write down the number and give you 50c to put in the slot (it's a convoluted system!).

Here's another way to find the toilets. You are in front of San Marco sq. facing the grand canal by the vaporetto stop, I think Zaccarihia is the name of the stop. On your left, that you can see, there are sidewalk cafes, shops and hotels. On your right, that you can see are artists stands and souvenir kiosks. Walk that way. There is also another vaporetto stop. Keep walking. When you reach the next Vaporetto stop, look behind you. There they are! Good luck

Ah, yes, MaryK, I remember those toilets well. During Carnivale one year my purse snagged on the turnstyle which then jammed with me in the middle. It took a very long while for an attendant to help me and she wasn't thrilled shall we say. If I knew more Italian I think I would have been insulted by her but I was too busy doing the "gotta go" hop.

I think they have modernized them since then and they are easy to find.

Thanks for answers. I have seen the ones on Riva Schiavoni;it is the ones behind the basilica that I never can locate. This is good information for the group I am taking this time!
