To versailles on arrival day then to Amboise?

Is this crazy or doable? We land and pick up car to head towards Amboise. I thought we could go to Versailles. I know we will probably be tired but I just hate to waste one of our precious Paris days going to Versailles. I have been there before (not a fan) but my son really wants to see it. My original plan was a stop in Chartres.

Please, please don't go to Versailles on your arrival day! I love the place, but you need to be in good shape, not tired, to appreciate its many facets. Chartres would be all right, I think, as it's compact and the cathedral and precincts are nice for relaxing, not trotting from room to room as in Versailles. Why not hit Versailles on your way back to Paris--or go in the late afternoon/early evening?

Not unless you have a suitcase full of amphetamines! Versailles takes a LOT of time. You'd be a basketcase driving to Amboise afterwards, I should think.

I agree with the Chartres suggestion on arrival day. Wonderful cathedral (one of the world's greatest!), and a nice little town to boot. My top tip: bring a compact pair of binoculars to get a good look at the stained glass.

Have fun in the Loire Valley!
