To Pompei from Positano

We will be in Positano the first week in July and plan to drive to Pompei for a day with our three teenagers. Does anyone have any thoughts about the drive? I will be the driver and am already nervous about driving to Positano from Rome (fear of heights/Amalfi coast). So - the thought of doing it more than once is not appealing.

Deborah - You will already have done the Pompeii-Positano section on the drive down from Rome - so you will just be doing it in reverse.

Only about 20 minutes of the drive is along the Amalfi Coast itself. After that you just drive over the hill to Mestre ... and join the main road to Pompeii/Naples.

If you don't want to drive it you can always go by public transport (- bus to Mestre station, then train to Pompeii Scavi).

Hope this helps ...

Hi

Can I ask why you are driving from Rome to Positano? Parking at Positano is limited and expensive. Easier by train. From Rome take the train to Naples. Then train it to Sorrento. Outside the train station is the bus depot where you can get to Positano. The Pompei stop is along the way to/from Naples. So bus from Positano to Sorrento station and then a train to Pompeii. TIP: If you have a fear of heights sit on the left hand side of the bus on the way to Positano and the right on the way back. That way you don't get the "views".

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info! I feel better knowing there are good options. We are driving because it is part of a three week trip in Italy. You are probably right about the parking - maybe we should rethink that leg of the trip.

Thank you!I think I will be able to handle 20 minutes...maybe I can just stare straight ahead and have my family describe the beautiful scenery.
