Taking a group of eight , between 21 and 35 years of age, to Milan from 25th Nov,11 to 20th Dec,11 on a study tour. Need budget accommodation?

Appreciate advice on accommosation and travel accessories for sta in Milan from 25th Nov to 20 th Dec 2011. Our budget is USD 50 per person day which should includes acco + breakfast + internet and be close to a linea 1 (red line) metro station. we are eight of us, 5 males and 3 females. A lift or elevator to room or apartment (unless it is on ground floor) is essential.

Looking for weather information and advise relating to what we should wear. We are from India average temperature now-a-days is 90 to 85 deg. F.

I think that you will find it very hard to find accommodation at USD 50 a day for places with ground floor (or elevator) + breakfast + internet.

In December, expect temperatures around 5 deg C.

Perhaps you did not read my post carefully, I stated USD 50 per person day , that is for a shared room it works out to USD 100 per room that accommodates two. It should be close to a metro station on linea 1. And if USD 100 per room is less for say 4 rooms taken for a month then what should the budget be??

As regards temperature, would 5 deg C be max, min or avg and what matters more is whether it rains or snows during Nov Dec? If yes, is it predictable or do we carry along umbrellas etc.?

Your budget is incredible low. You might find something very modest at 2 people per room as long as they don;t mind sharing a bed - but you may have trouble finding enough rooms in one place and you won't be able to be picky about breakfast, internet and definitely not elevator.

If each person wants a separate bed - at US $50 per night - I think you may be looking at beds in shared dorm rooms in hostels. And I would assune that looking for a specific location wold make this even more difficult.

And since you have left it so very late to make reservations your choices may be extremely limited. I would get in touch with the local tourist office NOW - as in today - explain your problem and see if they have any suggestions for options. The elevator at that price range could be a deal breaker.

As for preparing for Milan - it;s November - not dead of winter - but you will need mid weight coats (perhaps raincoat with liner) and probably hat, scarf and glvoes. Also be prepared for rain and definitely have sturdy folding umbrellas and waterproofed walking shoes.

I'm really sorry that you waited so long to enquire - since if you had done so 4 or 5 months ago there might have been other options available.

You might find a convent or monastery at those rates. Most will have a curfew. Are you willing to have a curfew? I'll find some links if you are open to that.

Milan can be tricky when it comes to pricing as it can often be booked up because of trade shows/conventions.

I have no personal knowledge of this - since it isn;t our price point - but I have seen several people reco the web site eurocheapo - and since you have only a few days before you leave yuo might want to consult it.

(You do know that $50 per night each is only about 70 euros for room with one double bed. The free breakfast and internet - as well as location may be doable - but no hotel is likely to have so many rooms on the ground floor - which means you will require an elevator- not often found in he cheapest properties).

Thank you for the response. budgets for training usually allocate more on training and less, yet a significant amount for the stay.

In Nov-Dec , in 2009 did a tour of Paris and two of us obtained a shared account at euro 70. That included Air-Conditioning, large dbl bed, brk-fast and Internet. The hotel had a lift. And was good. Assumed Milan would be similar. Perhaps, was wrong?

Checked a few sites and rooms are available at USD 100 onwards.

Key issues on which I shall appreciate a response are#

1. Hotels / hostels close to metro station on red line in Milan?

2. The group lead is 60 + and one trainee is is handicapped (fused knee joint). We require a lift to their floor or their rooms should be on ground floor.

3. Budget relaxations upto 20 percent are possiblle.

4. How reliable is the Metro in Milan?

70€ is low budget for Milan. Check the listings on eurocheapo.com.

Here's the website for the metro. I don't remember how accessible things were even though I was there recently. I do remember reading you are required to buy a ticket for your luggage, but I don't think anyone does. With staying so long, I would suggest some kind of pass.

There is a pdf about accessibility, but only in Italian. Charts about metro stop facilities starts on page 8. Even if listed as serviced, you can't always count on things being in working order in Italy.

I forgot to mention that if you're booking multiple rooms for 25 nights in one hotel, you might be able to negotiate a bit on the room rate.
