To Lubeck from Hamburg Airport - Best Way?

If I were to be landing at Hamburg airport and my first night's destination was Lubeck, how best to get there? Do I need to take the train to Hamburg HBF and then change, or is there a bus or other alternative? Thanks.

When I went from Hamburg to Lubeck, I drove. I think it takes about 1 1/2 hours normally but I had a problem with an overturned caravan. There was furniture all over the road. No doubt someone's vacation ended in a bust up there.

Lubeck is a wonderful small city. Be sure to see the puppetry museum. I found it fascinating.

Hi dovima,

in the area again?

There is a brand new bus service that has been operated from March 1 of this year that connects Hamburg Airport with Luebeck.
The busline is called "Traveliner".

Check their webpage (apparently in German only) for their schedule at

http://www.traveliner.de/fahrplan_anz.htm

As this is a schedule, it should be comprehendible even if you do not speak the language.

Fares are apparently something like € 14.-

Enjoy your trip!

It should read "...service that has been OPERATIVE".

If the schedule of the bus is inconvenient for you but you still want to rely on public transportation, you would have to take one of the frquently running Airport Express busses that stop in front of the Terminal and let it take you to either Ohlsdorf station, from where you would need to catch an S-Bahn to Central Station or take an Airport Express bus to Central Station directly.

I don't know about your schedule, and will admit that a car is unnecessary in Luebeck itself, but it might be nice to rent a car in order to be able to do some side trips to the seaside etc.

hsv,
Thank you for the information! I did not see your reply until just now (I guess I DO actually work when at work sometimes). Actually, I am still trying to make it to Northern Germany for the first time. My planned vacation for late 2003 encountered some problems and I had to "settle" for a briefer trip to Amsterdam, Maastricht and Trier. So, the delights of Lubeck and Hamburg still await me! Thanks again.
