Zurich would be the closest major airport - a few hours by train to Interlaken where you catch a 20-min train ride to Grindelwald

www.whichbudget.com for cheap airlines serving any two airports.

Milan is actually only about 4 hours from Grindelwald by train as well

Or from Amsterdam you can take a CityNightLiner train to Zurich overnight, arriving in Zurich in the morning

May is the off-season in Grindelwald area and you will have no problem finding accommodations on site

There is a hotel booking board in Grindelwald just opposite the train station - in the car parking lot and bus stop - green lights for vacancies, red for full

you may see quite a few redlights lit but not because they are full but are taking a rest or holiday during the slow season of May after winter ski season and summer hiking

a whole range of availabilities from places like the Nature Friends House that appeals to hikers of all ages - austere with self kitchen, etc. to B&Bs, budget hotels, ski dorms and on up.

Grindelwald is one of the cheapest places in Switzerland to sleep as they have so many budget accommodations geared to skiiers, hikers, etc who don't want frills

Grindelwald to me makes the perfect place - great views, etc. but Wengen also gets rave reviews - it's a bit more sedate than Grindelwald and a little more remote and upscale in its accommodations

I suggest you Google Grindelwald Tourist Office for a complete listing of accommodations and probably ability to book online with each

Obviously this is not the best time of year to be going to the Berner Oberland. You can expect highs in the mid fifties and lows around 40.
You can also expect clouds and rain according to the long range forecast.

At least the Grindelwald - First gondola will be in operation, but if cloudy I am not sure it would be worth the cost.

The gondola from Grindelwald Grund to the crest of the ridge to the west known as the Männlichen does not begin operation until May 31.

The train from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg operates all year. Kleine Scheidegg is where passenger headed for the Jungfraujoch change trains.
