To drive or not to drive?
We will be in Positano for 10days in April. I reserve a car rental for the last 3days while we're there: pick up the car in Sorrento and drop it off in Naples and take a train to Rome. I have read so many opposing opinions on this. Thoughts, anyone? Thanks in advance!

To be clear:
You are staying in Positano for 10 days in April. On Day 7, you are going to Sorrento and picking up a rental car, but you are taking it back to Positano. On Day 10, you are dropping off the rental car in Naples (where?) and taking the train to Rome. Is that correct? If that is correct, it only makes sense to rent the car if you are planning to use it visit Paestum and Pompei or Vesuvius or Caserta. I would also suggest that you keep the car and drop it off at Ciampino airport in Rome, rather than in Naples. It is VERY VERY difficult to drive a car in Naples if you are not born in Italy!!! If you do not want to drive the car to the airport in Rome, then drop off the car in Sorrento or Salerno. If you do not want to use the car to visit Paestum, Caserta and Pompei or Vesuvius or Caserta, then it does not make sense to have a car in Positano and pay so much to park it. You really don't need it. It is cheaper to take a taxi than to rent a car and park it if you only want to go to Ravello, etc. |
The intent was to do more exploring and not depend on the bus. Are the buses reliable?

Thank you pizzocchieri, we cancelled our rental and will go around by bus, taxis or on foot. I feel relieved. Thanks

You can also take ferries from Positano to Capri and Amalfi.
