To Do in Frankfurt?
 

Out of curiosity, I took a look at the destination guide on Fodor's:

Pretty funny that Day 1 is more or less the same as Day 2. Whatever you don't see in Day 1, the same list carries over to Day 2.

Fodor's usually does better than this....

Is Frankfurt really that dull?

There's almost always something of interest to see anywhere, I've found. In an absolute sense, that is.

Relatively speaking, though, Frankfurt isn't quite so interesting as other places in Germany -- but then, Frankfurt's raison d'etre isn't to be a tourist destination. It's a business and financial center, and does that purty durn well.

Last year, I had most of a day and a night to spend in that area before boarding my homebound flight out of the FAM airport. Rather than stay in Frankfurt, I took a short S-Bahn ride to Wiesbaden where I had a tasty evening meal, a relaxing visit to the Therme, and a lovely walk around an interesting and friendly little city.

If your situation is similar, I could certainly recommend Wiesbaden. Baden-Baden is similarly not far away by train, and is even more worth a visit.

I'm wondering what to do for the February long weekend. I was thinking that I'd skip Europe, but I took a look at airfares on Orbitz and it's a little over $500 to fly to Frankfurt. I've only passed through the airport on my way to the Rhine.

I did check and see that Strasbourg is about 2 hours away by train from Frankfurt.

Maybe I'll stay home. Since I'm not passing through, if there's not enough to occupy me, $500 can still seem like a waste. But granted, I'm sure that there's enough in Frankfurt, Strasbourg, Colmar (and probably even Stuttgart) to fill a long weekend.

And don't forget Mainz.

I do think there isn't much to do in Frankfurt - mostly because majority of the city was destroyed by WWII and not much historical stuff remained.

But seems like the museums will keep you occupied for at least a day or two. The Stadel Museum has a Vermeer, and a Bosch - maybe you can cross off a few more paintings on your list.

But spending $500 to cross off some paintings? I should just look at the reproductions at home. :-)

Actually I'm really interested in seeing the Issenheim altarpiece by Gruenewald in Colmar. It's in the Unterlinden museum.

At least in Belgium there're chocolates to buy. :-)
