Flying from US to Zurich- spend the night or head for the Alps immediately?

We are planning a European trip next May which will begin in Switzerland. We plan to visit the Grindelwald area in the Alps before heading to Paris. We will be flying into Zurich from Austin Texas. I was wondering would we be less fatigued if we spent the night in Zurich and take the train to Gridelwald the next day or should we just get on the train for our destination since the airport is on the same site as the train station? Let me add that there are no nonstop flights from Austin so we will have a layover in Dallas, Houston, or New York for several hours which will add to our travel time.

Hi tulip,

We find that if we just keep going after landing that we acclimate to the time change better.

OTOH, other folks prefer to take a nap.

Did this help?

Good evening, Ilovetulips
Hav on about four occasions, flown from
Chicago to Zurich via Swiss. Then taken the train directly to Grindelwald,
usually with a change at Bern and another in Interlaken to the BOB...
On the last two trips, check baggage in
Chicago which was transfered to rail
in Zurich for Grindelwald and the bags
arrived in Grindelwald on the same train..Checked into the hotel and then
got out immediately until dinner time,
had a good dinneer and then and only then rested for the night. Have a good trip, loved Grindelwald and the BO...

Thanks for the posts. Since this will our first trip abroad I wasn't sure how tired we will be and if it sounded like a lofty goal to fly then take the train to Grindelwald. Glad to hear that others have done it with success.

Yes, keep moving on day one. You will also need to change trains in Interlaken, and make sure it is at the east[Ost] station. It will be a long day but still better.

I've done this a few times (from Boston) and agree with dick and bob - definitely push on through to Grindelwald. It's only another three hours and it goes by quickly on the train. In addition to remembering that you change to BOB at Interlaken Ost, which will be the second stop in Interlaken, remember to look at the little destination sign near the door onto the train car in Interlaken - the train splits a few miles up the line and half goes to Lauterbrunnen.
