to and from Rome airport
 

I'm traveling to Rome in July with my two daughters (16, 21). We will arrive in Rome at 7:45 a.m. How long does it take to get into the City and what's the best/cheapest way to do it?

The Leonardo Express train is probably your best bet. It runs frequently between Fiumicino airport (I assume you are not arriving at Ciampino) and Termini station from which you can take a taxi to your hotel. The cost is 9.5 Euro. I agree. The Leonardo Express runs frequently (at leas every half hour, I believe), is cheap, and takes about half an hour to get from the airport to Termini, the main train station in Rome.

Check with your hotel. I stayed at the HOtel Julia last year and they arranged a shuttle for 12 euro.

I figured it out and the train from the airport to train station was 9.5 euro, then another for the subway to a stop near the hotel was 1 euro - I would have saved 1.5 euro and had to pull my bag through the airport and from the subway to the hotel (3 blocks). The shuttle dropped me off at the door of the hotel. Worth 1.5 euro to me.

The shuttle had to be arranged in advance and I paid the hotel.

Well, 3 x 9.50E is 28.50E, plus whatever the taxi costs from Termini to your hotel. Depending on where your hotel is, the taxi could easily cost 10E. www.airportshuttle.it will charge you 26E for the first person and 6E for each additional, so 38E. They'll pick you up at the airport and drop you right at your hotel. So much easier!

Slight correction about www.airportshuttle.it fares:

From central Rome to Fiumicino, it is 26 Euro plus 6 Euro for each additional person.

From Fiumicino to Rome, it is 31 Euro plus 6 Euro for each additional person.

Still worth it, in my opinion...

Eloise, I just looked at the airport shuttle website again, because when I checked it recently it was the same price FCO to Rome as Rome to FCO. The chart does say Rome to FCO and vice versa for 26E plus 6E each additional person. However, this time I noticed an additional sentence below the box that says to add 11E for FCO to downtown Rome, so it looks as though it is now 37E FCO to Rome plus 6E each additional person.

I strongly suggest you take the shuttle or even consider one of the limo services for about 50 euro. My daughter and I did the Leonardo Express and then had to walk a long, long way with our luggage to the taxi stand. Even though we had packed extremely light and only had carry-on size luggage, it was really no fun! I'm going to Rome next month and will use a limo service, no hesitation!

We took the train based on advice from the Avis chap after we had dropped the car off and regretted it very much. It was a long trek with our bags (from the car return place anyway), the train was crowded and the taxi fare at the other end was horrendous. We were ripped off royally, even after being warned and prepared. Somehow the taxi driver jigged the meter and charged us 27E for a 10 mins ride. He didn't even drop us off outside our hotel but another hotel around the corner. Needless to say we took a limo on the return journey and were very happy and wished we had taken one in to the city on arrival. Go the limo or shuttle.

Oh my goodness! We had exactly the same experience as Schnauzer, one year ago! We took the train from Arezzo to Termini in Rome, went out to the taxi line (about 1/10 of the distance of the Leonardo Express stop to the taxi line) and got in a taxi.

The driver charged 25 E to take us to Piazza Navona, took us at least a block from our hotel, and wouldn't surrender our luggage until we gave him the money. A nightmare.

We didn't have much choice, as we were coming from another city and not the airport, but it was a very unpleasant experience.

tuscan, obviously the same guy!! Ba....d. We were going from Terminii to the Pantheon - Del Senato. It does leave a bitter taste in your mouth doesn't it?

We flew into FCO stayed in the Historic district by the Vatican. Our hotel arranged a limo each way 50E on 1st leg and 45E on return trip. We didn't want to haul luggage on train or walk with it. The fee is per car not person - I would go with the limo.

SusanP: I admit I hadn't checked recently; from 31 Euro to 37 Euro - ouch! The rampant inflation in Italy is going to kill me, or if not me, my paltry bank balance!

We had our hotel (Best Western Mondial) make the limo arrangements and it came to $60US plus tip curb to curb for the 2 of us plus luggage. Was very much worth the fee IMOP.
