Tivoli or Orvieto - Sunday Daytrip - Does one have more/less open?

Am traveling to Rome in October and would like to take a daytrip to either Tivoli or Orvieto on a Sunday. Is one more appealing than the other in terms of sights, stores, restaurants being open?

Or, another option would be visiting Tivoli on Saturday afternoon and seeing Orvieto on Sunday. I will have 6 full days in Rome not counting a sidetrip to Ostia Antica. Does this amount of time seem plausible to visit both Tivoli and Orvieto, doing them any kind of justice (I don't like to rush sightseeing if avoidable).

It's my first trip to Rome and in the early (very excited ) stages of framing my trip. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

With 6 full days you already have one day trip, I think that you'll find Rome can fill the other time quite well.
Of the other 2 options, it depends on what you like best.
Do consider giving Rome as much time as possible.

I loved Tivoli's Villa d'Este and took the public bus there. I think an afternoon would be a good amount of time to see the water garden. It was so refreshing after the heat of Rome. I haven't been to Hadrian's Villa and don't know how much time you would need there.

Thank you for the feedback. I think I explained it poorly - I will have 6 full days in Rome, plus the 1/2 day to Ostia Antica, plus 2 more days (Sat. and Sun.) to do daytrips and/or spend more time in Rome. Total time in Rome = 8.5 days.

According to Fodors.com (see Destinations- Rome) Tivoli is open daily.

According to Frommers.com (see destinations) The main sitghts of Orvieto are open daily.

Heather - You're on a winner either way.

If you're into Roman ruins, Hadrian's Villa below Tivoli is one of the best sights in Italy IMO. Here are some pics:

And the fountains of Villa d'Este make that well worth a visit too. Take a 'virtual tour':

You can get to either Hadrian's Villa or Villa d'Este by bus from Ponte Mammolo station (- on metro Line 'A').
There's a bus service between the two (- they're about 3 miles apart).

Orvieto has plenty to offer too ...

Hi Ira - I'm pretty sure Villa d'Este is closed on Mondays.

Heather - BTW I don't think you'd have time for both Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este in one afternoon.

Thank you all for the responses - this was exactly the kind of info I needed to work into my schedule. October is a long way off, but I want to figure out when to request Scavi tour time, etc.

I'm going to plan on a full day for Tivoli with Hadrian's villa and a full day for Orvieto.

Steve, the links you provided are fantastic. And, a *very* belated thank you for all of the posts you've made on the Dolomites. It was great information to use on my trip in October 2003. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Ira, thank you for the openings/closings ... I was thinking more of shops and restaurants being closed on Sundays, but the main focus of the trips is the sights after all (not that food, wine, and shopping ever sways my decisions ).

You can easily do Hadrian's Villa and the Villa D'Este in less than one full day; there are several tour companies that do this very trip from Rome all the time.

Heather - Your welcome

If you prefer an organised tour to Tiovoli rather than public transport, try:

APPIAN

Hope this helps ...
