Titlis, Rigi, or Pilatus... which one?

Hello, everyone. I'll be in Luzern for 2-3 nights in mid-March and would like to take a daytrip to one of these mountain tops. Which one would you choose and why?

Thanks so much.

Hi Idnas71,

Though I haven't been to ANY of these peaks -- even after two visits to the area -- other posters have recommended Pilatus:

Hope this helps!

Check to see when they open. Pilatus is closed for the winter, can't remember when it re-opens in spring.

But we really enjoyed both times, took the golden circle tour last October and the trip before just the cog train to the top and back.

Hi Folks,

Small correction here. Pilatus is actually open -- accessable by gondola & cable car. The cogwheel train is closed as is the toboggan ride. Check at www.pilatus.ch.

Good morning, Idnas71 Pilatus can easily be made as a half day trip. Taking the bus to Kreins, then the gondola and cable car to the Kulm.
Just make sure you have a clear day, have been up Pilatus when it was totally fogged in with no view. Is a fairly good little restaurant atop, for a light lunch... Titlis will involve taking rail to Engelberg about one hour and then cable car up. For Rigi taking a boat to Vitznau or rail to Arth-Goldau and then rack railway up. Both would be closer to a day trip and both have restaurants atop. Richard of LaGrange Park, IL>

I have done all three, but all in the summer (no, I take that back, I once did Pilatus during Christmas week).

I think Pilatus is the most dramatic, but of course, it totally depends on whether it is a clear day and you have a good view. I love going up through the trees in the small gondolas, rather than the huge revolving cable car at Titlis. And the most exciting way to do Pilatus is the full round trip including the cogwheel up or down, but I agree you'll need to check to see if that is operating in March.

Rigi is fun, because you have several methods of getting up and down, and a little more easy walking and different viewpoints at the top.

I think Titlis was the least interesting of the three except for watching some daredevil snowboarders up there -- still doing their thing in June!

Good morning, all. Thank you for the helpful information. I should have searched myself to find that thread from June of this year... my apologies.

I was aware that the cog line is closed in winter at one of these mountains (forget which one at the moment) but I think I read in my Frommers book that the alternative route is actually a more spectacular ride. That's another thing... I think I'm looking for the most exhilarating overall experience. I'm sure whichever I choose will be memorable and fun.

Thanks again!
