We used www.romaround.it and did the 1/2 daytour of ancient Rome. Mauro was our guide and we loved him and the tour. He really knew his stuff and had an absolute love for his city and its history.

I highly recommend him!

Happy Travels.

Can anyone tell me if we can see the colosseum with out a guided tour? My husband was able to go on his own and see not only the colosseum but the Sistine Chapel when he was in Rome on business about 15 yrs. ago. Is it necessary to do a tour for either of these? We prefer going and seeing sites at our own pace. Can we make reservations and see these two sites on our own? Thanks

It is not necessary to take a tour to see either the Colosseum or the Sistine Chapel, which is part of the Vatican Museums. I do not believe you can make reservations at either site, however, unless you reserve a private viewing of the Sistine Chapel after hours, which is apparently possible but very pricey and does involve a tour.

You can see both on your own. The Vatican has a guided tour you can book in advance, but just general admission can't be reserved. They have audio guides you can rent if you don't want a guided tour.

When we were in Rome DH & I just went to the Colosseum. There are guides at the Colosseum wearing Blue Badges. They are really knowledgable. We spent a half day at the Colossuem and the other half of the day touring around the Forums. Very easy, no reservations required. I can't remember the price. But I would recommend it.

Context's 'Roma Antica' tour will cover the Colloseum and the forum. I did it and the Vatican Art Tour - both of which I considered to be money well spent.

Mango7, the Context Rome tour for the Coliseum and Forum is Roma Antica tour under Small Group Itineraries. It’s excellent, I have done it a few times and always learn something new, as each guide has a different expertise. I agree you do not need a tour guide if you have done reading and have a good book like the DK/Eyewitness guide, but the Context Rome tours are really exceptional, the very best I have taken anywhere in the world; and I really look for these types of things.

IMO ... get there as it opens 830am is good as cues build after this time to some quiet rediculous lengths by midday .. pick up an audioguide . save yourself 50 bucks.

When my husband and I went to Rome five years ago, we had a wonderful guide named Giulia. We are going back to Rome in April 2007 and we plan on hooking up with her again.

Below is a little info about her that she recently sent me.

Greetings! It certainly has been a long time. How are you and Mark doing? I hope all is well. I am writing to announce with pride that on May 12th I graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a Master's degree in Art History. I sincerely hope to be able to put my newly acquired knowledge to use for you once again. Please feel free to get in touch if you or any other family members or friends should be heading to Rome in the future. To that end, please be sure to note and pass on the changed e-mail address. I will be using this address([email protected]) from now on. I hope to see you again in the Eternal City!

A fond "ciao,"
Giulia Bernardini

Giulia works for herself - she's not part of a tour group.

Just a quick story... we were at the Colosseum a few years ago with a group of 7 and were looking for a tour. There was a long line for the guided tours.

As were were waiting, we were approached by a college age male who spoke perfect English and asked if we were looking for a tour. He said he was a college student attending seminary school in Rome and tours to make a few extra dollars (euros).

We'll we took him up on the offer... it cost us like $40 (which was a lot less than the official tour). He was very well informed, very nice and had great flip charts and overlays to illustrate how it would have looking in it's original shape.

Our biggest problems was that people from the 'official' tours kept trying to join our private tour.
