Tips for sensitive adult ears on airplanes?

Although I generally eschew medications in all but the most desperate circumstances (probably just silly that way), I've started taking a decongestant on flights. I would have to look up the brand, but they are green cylindrical pills. I try to take it 30 minutes before takeoff and 30 minutes before landing, and it makes an amazing difference. I have had flights where I was practically screaming in pain (although I managed to keep silent).

Besides a nasal spray,chewing gum, & anti-histamine, ask the airline hostess for the hot cup treatment:
- 2 paper cups stuffed with hot damp (wrung out) paper towels.Place the cups over your ears for soothing comfort.
