Tips for Geneva
 

Hi everyone!!!
I am going to Geneva this coming week.In all the forums I have browsed everyone agrees Geneva is quite expensive. Could you give me any tips regarding restaurants, shopping, and what to do during 4 days there?

Catch the train out to Vevey and/or Montreux. It's only 1 hour and these towns are incredibly beautiful and right on the lake. Because they are smaller than Geneva it is lots easier to figure out what to see and do once you're there.

If the weather is good, see if you can take a boat (timetables etc. at www.cgn.ch).

Also, if you get to Montreux and the weather is good, go up to Glion or Caux, (www.montreux-mountain.ch).

Take the boat or the city-trolleybus to Chillon and visit the castle. www.chillon.ch

Another nice thing to do is to take the train to Nyon and the small train up to Arziers and beyond to St. Cergue near the French border, or the coach Nyon-Gimel - it's the Jura mountain region, you can do great hiking up there, with grand views over the lake and across into the French alps,

In terms of Geneva itself there are plenty of rather IMO "moderately" priced places once you get away from the shores of the lake. You won't starve but you might prepare yourself for "ethnic" food, too.

Funny, everyone's telling you to get out of Geneva! Do visit the cathedral in old town where they have excavated ruins under the building. Fascinating! Then take the train out of there. between Lausanne and Vevey are many chsrming hillside towns along the wine trail. You can walk or take the wine train. Also, I highly recommend a trip to Gruyeres with it's beautiful castle and have a fondue at one of the good restaurants. We ate at the Hotel de Ville in the back with incredible views of the valleys and countryside. If you enjoy walking, take the train to Bulle and then walk to Gruyeres. great trip. Don't miss Chateau de Chillon in Vey taux (outside Montreux).
