Tips for a special night in Venice?
Hello fellow Fodorites!

Should I take cash or travellers che... oh just kidding on that one. My real question is this. Me and the Misses will be celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary while in Vencice this May. I was hoping for some specific suggestions on extra romantic things I could do for her on that special night.

Obviously a gondola ride comes to mind. But, where's the best spot? Is there a best time? How about restaurants? I don't mind splurging a little, but to be honest, if it costs to much neither of us will really enjoy it, we'll just worry that it was to expensive.

Please feel free to tell me about your romantic moments in Venice and what it was that made it so special.

Millie Grazie!

You can have a delightful dinner at www.anticomartini.com (is $50 per person too much to go over your comfortable threshold?)

The website might lead you to the conclusion that - - you know, this is "too slick" - - I bet it's tourist crap - - cut, dried and baled. Don't draw that (wrong) conclusion. I assure you - - it's a special place, and the owner himself will try to see that you have a very special anniversary.

Best wishes - - for 14 more!

Rex

Rex, Thanks for the prompt reply! $50 sounds perfect to me! We'll check it out.

Awww come on now, surely more than one person has some romantic hints for Venice?

We always enjoy taking the #1 Vaporetto all the way down the Canale Grande at night, sitting up front for a spectacular view of this wonderful city!

Turnip,

IMHO, the most extra romantic thing you could do is to blow the extra bucks and hire a gondola for just the two of you that evening after dinner. I found the nighttime gondola ride incredibly romantic and mysterious--and I was with 6 other people!!!!

Take her for an after dinner drink (or a pre-dinner cocktail) to one of the cafe's in San Marco. Its really romantic to sit and listen to the live music, and enjoy the piazza when its quieter. The drink prices are a little much, but its still worth it.

We loved the meal we had at Vini da Gigio in the Cannaregio district. It's a small charming restaurant with wonderful, simple food. They put us at a table in the corner and opened the window so we could have a view of the water. It seems to be quite popular, so you'll need a reservation (we made ours the day before), and it easily fits into your budget.

I recently spent six romantic evenings in Venice with my wife, and the most romantic things were the simplest: just stroll around the city together, at a leisurely pace. During the day, you might notice restaurants or other places that you'll want to revisit at night.

Get lost together. Wandering the streets of Venice at night is safe, and wonderful, when the throngs of day-trippers have left. Dine at a quiet place and relax.

Don't try to see too many things, or else you'll be rushed. The best sights in Venice are the quiet back streets, the small canals, the tiny restaurants....the things that aren't in the guidebooks.

Venice is automatically romantic. Enjoy your anniversary.
