Tips and Tricks: A Report on Venice and Austria
#21
Sue_xx_yy, we just returned from our third attempt to fall in love with Venice. We've now spent the equivalent of two weeks there, so I think it's just not in the cards for us. Maybe it was the rat we encountered one evening... a new meaning to "rat-like maze." Or the tremendous amount of "Murano glass" that couldn't possibly have all been produced on that tiny island.
I agree with you about Ca' Rezzonico. What turned us off most was the staff's insistence we move through the apartment rooms in a specific order even though the place was nearly empty. And no place to look out onto the Grand Canal! In contrast, the staff at Ca d'Oro was charming and helpful while the art and artifacts displayed were fairly uninteresting. The Grand Canal views from the terraces and the lowest level's mosaic floor were worth the entry fee.
We also enjoyed the Treasury Museum in Vienna, along with the Silver Museum, the oddly fascinating Sisi Museum and the daily Lipizzaner exercise period. Bicycles would be nice at Schonbrunn, but I'm sure they'd create all sorts of problems competing with the pedestrians. Did you ride the "train" around the perimeter?

Jean, I apologize for not answering your question sooner. I was extremely busy at work for several months, and stopped going to Fodors for awhile. So if you're still around....
No, we didn't ride the train around the perimeter. You have a possible point about the bike/pedestrian thing, although at Versailles they accommodate bikes.
Re the rat in Venice: maybe it would have helped if you had imagined him as the lead from 'Ratatouille'?
