I have read the extensive list of opinions on another thread regarding tipping in France, but was wondering (as this will be my first time in Switzerland) whether most of you would tip differently in Switzerland or pretty much the same as you would in France...?

Because the general prices are so high, tipping isn't normally expected in Switzerland (all restaurant tabs include service), and most just leave loose coins or round up to the nearest franc.

It has nothing to do with the general level of prices: most customers in Swiss restaurants are Swiss and re not affected by the dramatic devaluation of the $ or the € .

Service charge is always included in the prices quoted on the menus. Rounding up to the nearest franc is usual. Exceptional service when having had an expensive meal in a top restaurants is rewarded with rounding up to the nearest 5 or 10 francs.

I was told some years ago that tipping is/was not expected in Switzerland. I now leave whatever small change, i.e if I've given the waitress/waiter 5 francs and the cost of my drink was 3 francs I might sometimes leave the change, not always, it was always received with a smile and thanks. I have also paid the bill and walked away without tipping. I would say that tips are not expected.
