Tipping in Paris

Can someone please tell me how the tipping part of the meal takes place in Paris. I know some places add it directly into the check. What is the average percentage to tip by??

Also, do you leave it on the table or give it directly to your waiter?

Hi JJ,

The listed prices include a 15% Service Charge. This pays the help.

A tip is an additional gratuity that you leave the waiter, if you feel the service has been worth it.

The usual tip is a euro or three.

It is better to leave cash on the table, since if you add a tip to your credit card tab it technically belongs to the owner.

We usually hand our separate cash tip for the waiter directly to him - like in Germany. It seems more personal and more like a thank you for good service.

I think that France and Germany may be different in respect to leaving a tip or handing directly to the waiter. I read or 'heard' that the French do not like being handed cash directly. That is why counters have the little trays. I had a cashier once point to the tray rather than take cash from me.
