Tipping in Ireland
Hi All - Last request from "6 days in Ireland" You have all been so helpful - I don't think I'll ever plan a trip again, without first checking in on this forum. I have rarely stayed in B&B's but will be doing so for most of this quick trip. Do I leave a tip each day at the various B&B's we'll be staying in? I don't want to insult anyone either way: by leaving one or not leaving one - and if we do tip - approx. how much and do I leave it in the room or at the breakfast table or both? Any insight would be appreciated as time is coming quickly - Will let all know how it went upon return.
Thank you |
General guide is - no tipping in B&Bs, and not even in hotels, as service is always included, as is the tax. Since most B&Bs are owner-operated with no staff, if you want to show appreciation, write some nice comments in the guest book and recommend the place to others. If your breakfast is served by staff - often young people in part-time work, you can leave a small tip - no more than 1-2 euro, and give them directly to servers. They will appreciate it. But don't feel ogbliged to do so.

Definitely no tipping required in Irish B&B, as Alec above has said they are owner operated. I'm Irish and we generally don't tip in hotels either (at least not nightly like I would do in the US), I would usually leave a few euro on a last night. It is not standard practice. As an Irish person the only places where I would tip here are in a restaurant (but it would not be 20% or anything like it as is US practice) and if I took a taxi I might round up money. Maybe a hairdressers but I happen to go to an owner so don't tip there.

Hey JK
It may be worth your while to take a look at this review when you are choosing your B&B. http://www.saveafewbob.ie/holidayingathome/ Hope this helps. You may also pick up some other money saving tips for when you holiday in Ireland. |

Hi ... good question -- we did not ask it before we went - and man -- people were happy with us -- we tipped everyone -- didn't know it wasn't the custom there -- lol - we are 20+ percent tippers in restuarants -- so our servers generally made out well.
Actually, didn't tip the B&B's -- as they were owner run - but the cabbies, servers and our day - driver - he made out! lol |
Off and running - 24hrs til take off - will let you all know how we fared. Thank you all for the good advice.

You do not tip in B&Bs. In hotels you tip the bellman who carries your luggage, and we leave a modest tip for the maid or if we ask for a special service - different pillows or extra towels or whatever.
