Tipping at Barcelona and Venice restaurants and bars

Is it true that you are not supposed to?

20% tipping is not expected as in the US - since workers receive decent salaries.

Locals often leave small change or a little more for extra special service.

We usually tip about 10% - since it just seems so cheap not to do so (ingrained after 50+ years of tipping) but know 20% is ot expected.

Look around to see what the locals are doing, but tipping is up to you, but Spaniards seldom tip and even less so since the crisis. We seldom leave more than 5€ on a normal lunch or dinner, a few Euros if we're having the menu del dia at lunch.

Round up the bill or up to 5%. Yes, it feels horrible if you or any of your family have waited on tables, but the waitstaff are not kids on less than minimum wage but professionals who are reasonably paid.

Don't forget to check the bill...in many places a service charge will already be included in your total...in the UK generally 12.5% is already added so you don't add more than that. If the restaurant says service compris then it is already included.

"in the UK generally 12.5% is already added "

Might be ina few places but certainly not generally. Maybe some places in London do add a service charge and if you are in a larger party then maybe, but otherwise it's not added.

Sorry, should specify in London of course...and about 80%+ of the places we go have it already added...if it is a sit down place at least check the bill before adding additional tips. It is certainly more the norm than not in London if you sit down to eat in a restaurant type place like say Pizza Express.

Why are we talking about the UK for?
In Spain there is no such thing as service charges.
There is not rule about tipping. Leave something to say thank you for the service if you wish. When taking a drink only then the odd few cents from the change will do.
